Did the Pakistan Army really surrender “93,000 troops” in East Pakistan to the Mukti Bahini and the Indian Army?

This myth is widely propagated, especially by our own people. Let’s examine the facts.

The reality is that the number of Pakistani military personnel in East Pakistan was far lower than 93,000. A full-strength army corps usually consists of around 50,000 troops, but East Pakistan had only around 35,000–45,000 Pakistan Army personnel. Out of these, around 9,000 Bengali personnel mutinied and joined the Mukti Bahini. There were few 1000 civilians prisoners as well including government servants, their families, ordinary West Pakistani civilians etc even after combining them as well, the total figure remains less than 50,000 not 93,000.

These forces were part of a single, under-strength corps commanded by a Lieutenant General. They lacked adequate artillery, tanks, and air defence assets compared to a conventional field formation.

Let’s take a detailed look at the actual numbers, composition, and circumstances surrounding the 1971 surrender using international sources, including Indian sources, to examine and counter this commonly repeated claim.
