Recently rewatched Michael Mann's Heat in preparation for Mann's upcoming release, and god damn this film holds up. Heat is throwback, old school filmmaking. Consider what makes this film iconic: the dark shots of LA & the fact that not a single set was built in the making of this film. The authentic sounds of gunfire in captured by shooting fully loaded blanks. Val Kilmer's unforgettably intense performance. And Pacino & De Niro at the absolute height of their powers. When you take all of the above into consideration, it's no mystery that Heat has influenced countless films over the last 30 years- from The Town to Inside Job to The Dark Knight. For our money, Heat stands alone as the greatest heist movie ever made- including the greatest bank robbery scene in Cinema history. With Ferrari coming December 25th, there's never been a better time to give Heat another watch. After all, the action is the juice.
