The huge BTS Jin fansite master Koni nim has announced that she will be closing her site because of the people who have been harassing her. The people who cropped out her logo, reposted her photos however they wanted, and benefited from her work should reflect on their actions. The people who used her photos to produce merchandise without permission should also reflect.
At the very least, they should have contacted her and asked for permission before making goods with her photos. All traditions are collapsing. The rights to produce merchandise using the photos she took belong to her alone.
She spent a great amount of money traveling all around the world to take and share those photos. Her photos are not public property. They should be respected and used in a way that helps support her ability to continue creating more work.
Please help her reclaim her rightful ownership and rights over her work. And I hope the people who spoke to her disrespectfully will reflect on their behavior.
Fan sites are even more important in this era. Do you know why? Among all the fan sites for the BTS members, do you know how many are still following entire tours around the world and consistently leaving behind the highest quality photos? Even if you look through all BTS fan sites, Koni nim still follow tours with this much passion and dedication. This is something we are proud of. Please leave her words of comfort and support.
Please protect Koni nim.
Today, the news that fansite Koni nim has announced its closure leaves a deep sense of emptiness and sadness among fans. It feels like a pillar of fan history is collapsing. Those who watched concerts from the 3rd floor rather than VIP seats would feel this even more strongly. The company cameras cannot capture Jin 100 percent. Scenes of Jin singing the chorus are often cut and not shown. It was most serious during the Goyang concert.
The reason the lack of camera coverage of Jin at the Goyang concert matters so much is that this was the only time Korean news companies brought professional cameras to film. Korean news companies do not travel to overseas locations. Therefore, all news content released so far is based entirely on footage filmed by the company that day. Even so, news outlets manage to capture brief moments and place Jin’s face in the main headlines. This reflects the effort they put in.
But what about overseas concerts? When news companies report, there is always a “provided by company” label. That’s right. Unless we rely on fan sites or fan-taken fancams, news outlets can only show what the company provides to represent the current state of the fandom and the performance. It is essentially fully controlled content. Is this really the right thing? I keep thinking about it. If we recall the time when Jin’s appearance was never captured during Fake Love, even though it is a song where his part is most prominent, there were concerts where Jin was not shown at all on camera. Was that the company’s intention?
That is why I believe on-site cameras are so important. Our home masters are truly creating miracles. We have no choice but to rely on the fancams they upload. Did you see the Las Vegas concert this time? Did you see how much of Jin’s chorus was actually captured? Not only the chorus, but even his original parts are not properly filmed.
That is why we are grateful to those who take the risk of being at the venue to film and photograph. Removing the logos of fansites from their work is not honoring their effort, but rather comes close to mocking it. People get angry when even a small moment of their work is taken, so how can it make sense to dismiss the efforts of people who travel around the world for this?
If you want to do that, then only use official photos. But instead of doing that, taking fansite photos and removing the logos with AI is because their aesthetics are beautiful. And fansites of Jin are not simply people who upload photos. They have been a central pillar of Jin’s support for nearly 10 years.
Fansites use most of the profits from exhibitions to fund support projects again. It is something individuals cannot do on their own, and we spent money buying goods because we trusted them. It is the result of mutual trust between both sides.
They have never taken advantage or run away with money. They have maintained trust through consistent large-scale support projects for 10 years. Such large-scale support refers to efforts made when individual activities were restricted, working to raise awareness of his name. They made it possible for an artist to have his image displayed on buildings at a massive scale.
People saw this and came to believe that this artist’s fanbase has immense power, and these actions demonstrated the cohesion of the fandom, which is one of the reasons Jin is now able to handle major commercial roles. It is one of the clearest examples of what a fandom can achieve.
Donations, large-scale advertisements, exhibitions, cafés filled with countless people—these are all examples of a cohesive group with a real, tangible presence. Please send your encouragement to Koni nim and hope that she may one day return. I sincerely ask for this. 😢
Please protect Koni nim.
