Welcome back, Owls! 🦉
A new semester means new opportunities to discover, collaborate and put research into action.
We’re looking forward to another fall of bold ideas, hands-on learning and real-world impact across the Institute for Smarter Cities, Spaces, and Health.
Here’s to a great semester! 👏
Institute faculty fellow @A_Imteaj recently spoke at the NAIRR Pilot Classroom Expansion Conference in Orlando, sharing strategies for bringing LLMs, multimodal AI and hands-on learning into computing curricula.
👏 Congrats, Ahmed, on the invited talk!
Our 2026 @NSF REU students designed, built, tested, questioned and adapted — discovering what they’re capable of and where research might take them next.
Take a look back at their summer: https://t.co/QTk2X7GUjr
Congratulations to Olamilekan Banjo, Ph.D., on successfully defending his dissertation and presenting his research at @IEEEorg EMBC in Toronto! 👏
Mentored by faculty fellow @BehnazGhoraani , Ph.D., his work advances wearable technology for real-time heart monitoring
Our friends at @FAUBrain need our votes! 🦉
Their MobileMinds program is a finalist for the @pbillustrated Education Innovation Award, recognizing its work bringing hands-on neuroscience and STEM education to students across Palm Beach County.

Let’s show our fellow Owls some support!
A strong finish to a summer of research! 👏
Students in our My Streetscape Summer Research Institute presented their final projects and shared their posters at the FAU OURI Summer Student Showcase.
Congrats to this year's cohort on six weeks of research, discovery and growth!
For Emily and Grace, six weeks with the My Summer Streetscapes Research Institute grew into a year of research with I-SENSE, a second summer of research, and even took them to Italy to present at @IEEESmartComp 2026.

Research isn't complete until it's shared.
As the My Streetscape Summer Research Institute wraps up, students are preparing for their final presentations and the @fauouri Summer Student Showcase with new skills in research poster design and scientific communication.
Thanks to Selah and Donna for leading a great workshop and helping prepare the next generation of researchers 👏
From the streets of West Palm Beach to the labs of Boca Raton.
This week, our My Streetscape Summer Research Institute students toured I-SENSE and @fauengineering research labs and maker spaces, seeing firsthand how ideas become real-world technologies. The visit gave them a broader look at engineering, research and the many paths STEM can take.

Congratulations to our 2026 @NSF REU cohort on an outstanding summer of research!
After nine weeks of tackling real-world challenges, our students presented projects spanning smarter cities, smarter spaces and smarter health. While the program has ended, the knowledge, skills and connections they've built will continue to shape whatever comes next.
👏 Congratulations to our entire cohort, and to our award recipients:
🏆 Outstanding Research: Roger
🏆 Outstanding Presentation: Nidhi, Emily, Grace, Juliette, Dylan
🏆 People's Choice: Shania and Irem
Our summer REU students have been hard at work for the past 9 weeks and are ready to present their final research projects!
Please join us in person or via Zoom to support the next generation of talent emerging from I-SENSE. We couldn't be prouder of their hard work and dedication, and we're excited to give them a proper send-off into the next chapter of their careers🎓

The most valuable lesson a researcher can learn isn't always technical.
In our latest I-SENSE Impact story, alumnus Erfan Farhangi reflects on how research, mentorship and leadership shaped his career — from AI research in our Smarter Cities focus area to his current role as a research scientist at @Meta

Smarter cities start with careful observation👀
During a walking tour of downtown West Palm Beach, students in the My Streetscape Summer Research Institute examined how architecture, urban design and privacy-conscious sensing technologies shape the way people experience public spaces.
By studying everything from crosswalks and storefronts to pedestrian sensors, they're learning how real-world data can help create communities that are more accessible, connected and people-centered.

260+ weather stations. 47 water level stations. 32 Florida counties.
The I-SENSE Southeast Atlantic Econet continues to grow, delivering real-time environmental observations to @NOAA and @NWS that support forecasting, emergency preparedness and community resilience across Florida.

Research growth doesn't just happen in the lab...
Our summer REU students took on FAU Campus Rec's Challenge Course, building teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills they'll carry into their research careers. Sometimes the best way to tackle new challenges is to step outside your comfort zone.
