It is deeply saddening and tragic that a comrade who stood firmly against such inhuman practices has himself fallen victim to the very violence he fought against.

On October 24, the Principal District and Sessions Court in Koppal district in Karnataka sentenced 98 accused to life imprisonment for atrocities against dalits in Marukumbi village in 2014. The verdict comes after years of struggle in the courts and on the ground by the CPI(M) and organisations such as the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha. 10 years ago, a mob of upper caste people had attacked dalits in Marukumbi, pelting stones and assaulting women and children with sticks. They also set two houses on fire.
The attacks came in the context of consistent struggles by the CPI(M) and mass organisations against untouchability in the village. Dalits were barred from from the local barbershop and tea shop. The struggle against untouchability led to a social boycott of Dalits in the area. A few days later, after a clash between two groups at a cinema theatre, the mob wreaked havoc on the village.
In the aftermath of these incidents, the CPI(M) was once again in the forefront of fighting for justice. A year later, in 2015, Veeresh, a 45-year-CPI(M) activist, was set to depose in court against those responsible for the mob violence. However, on July 10, his body was found on the railway tracks in suspicious circumstances.
The sacrifices and struggles of Veeresh and many others like him finally bore fruit yesterday. @cpimkarnataka State Secretary U. Basavaraj welcomed the verdict, saying "This is a victory for our long struggle."

It was a writ petition filed in 2002 by P Shanmugam, who was the general secretary of the TNTA and who is now a member of the CPI(M) Central Committee, that led to the appointment of a special court and a special prosecutor in the #Vachathi case.
The Madras High Court upholds the conviction of 215 accused in the Vachathi case. Forest, police, and revenue officials raped 18 women in the tribal hamlet of Vachathi, Tamil Nadu on 20 June 1992. The fight for justice was led by the CPI(M).

The Vachathi incident was brought to light by efforts of CPI(M)-led Tamil Nadu Tribal-peoples Association(TNTA). CPI(M) State Secy A Nallasivan's writ petitions (at SC in 1992, & at HC in 1995) were instrumental in getting the investigation going & in it being handed over to CBI.

"How long shall we continue to deny equality in our social and economic life? If we continue to deny it for long, we will do so only by putting our political democracy in peril."
Salutes to Babasaheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his birth anniversary.
The Central Govt was forced to retract its circular and reissue guidelines to make expenditure for SC/ST development mandatory in MPLADS scheme after Comrade @JohnBrittas , CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member refused to back down on his demand against anti-Dalit, anti-tribal guidelines.
