If there’s one word we Nigerians have over-misused in this life, it’s "would".

Why do we use “would” so much when we obviously mean "will".

“Will” is for talking about future events and “would” is for hypothetical situations, like when you want to say “let’s imagine that”.

Don’t worry, I have some practical examples:

Incorrect: "I would call you when I arrive."

Correct: "I will call you when I arrive."

Incorrect: "I would let you know when he comes”

Correct: "I will let you know when he comes"

Incorrect: "She would come to the owambe parry if she is free."

Correct: "She will come to the owambe parry if she is free."

Incorrect: "I would like to know if you would come with me."

Correct: "I would like to know if you will come with me."

"Would" is used to express hypothetical or conditional situations in the past or future, or to make polite requests. But if the main verb in the sentence is in the future tense, it's more accurate to use "will".

Correct uses of “would”:
"Would you please pass the ata dundun?"

"I would like some respect, please."
