@segun_are@smbclient1 Segun, rest! I can mention 50 crack computer scientists who are open-source developers like myself. We are doing exactly what we learned in school. I have a double degree, one in Computer Science and another in Artificial Intelligence, and yes, I dey do exactly wetin I study.
Also, some schools abroad and opportunities still specifically require it.
So maybe the degree is no longer the complete package, but it still provides an edge in certain situations?
If most people in tech say they learned the majority of their practical skills outside university, does that mean degrees like Computer Science are losing relevance?
Because in reality, some companies still prefer candidates with Computer Science backgrounds.
I studied Computer Science, but I’ve ended up using more of the Physics and Maths I learned at uni in my career 😂. I haven’t written a single line of C++ since my third year at uni. Most of what I know today I learnt outside of Uni

@agirlneedsajob@smbclient1 Technical knowledge is only as good as the ability to apply it. Real-world experience and project-based learning often fill the gap that theory leaves. How do you think schools can better integrate practical skills?
@yash_patel2003@smbclient1 Interesting point, but it raises a larger question about the value of formal education versus practical skills. How do you think the industry can better recognize diverse pathways to success?
I’m a graduate of computer science.
Let me tell you the truth, the knowledge I have in tech did not come from my 4 years in the university. We were thought nothing! Computer science department with no Computer lab or practical. Lmao 😂
And this is the same in most Uni
I sha don’t know if the system has changed for good
@AntiSemanik Hmm, the first question now is what skills do you have ? You need to start from somewhere. You don’t really need computer science or cybersecurity degree to get a job anyway. You can build the skills, position yourself, join the right community, get a good mentor.
