Imagine unfurling something that Mary Queen of Scots created 😮

Here is a glimpse behind the scenes today as we work on a project with University of Stirling. This is the Blue Blanket, a saltire banner that Queen Mary and 'the four Marys' (her besties) sewed together. 👸💁‍♀️💁‍♀️💁‍♀️💁‍♀️

It is said that if Mary needed to call her loyal subjects to arms, the banner would be hung from the cross on Broad Street, Stirling. It was mostly used for ceremonial ocassions for hundred of years, and that is why it is in such a delicate condition.

Our newest exhibition, Darkness on the Edge of Democracy by Andrew Hay opens today.

The Smith is pleased to welcome this ambitious exhibition that explores the legacy of The Miners Strike, 40 years after they began in 1984.

Before he was a practicing artist, Andrew was a Shop Stewart who took part in the Strike by organising and delivering food parcels to mining communities. Bearing witness to such events left a lasting impression on him and has been a significant influence in his artistic practice
