@krishnabgowda@TVMohandasPai Dear minister, humble request.. Please get to close eateries in residential areas to shut shop by 10 pm. It is too much noise and a breeding ground for people to have fights and arguments. Nagawara VHBCS layout has2 many PGs and the above mentioned issues. Please help
👉This is called postprandial somnolence (the “food coma” phenomenon). It’s common and usually results from several physiological factors rather than one single cause.
Why does it happen?
1. Post-meal blood flow redistribution
* After eating, blood flow increases to the gastrointestinal tract to aid digestion.
* Although the brain continues to receive adequate blood flow through autoregulation, the body shifts into a “rest-and-digest” (parasympathetic) state, promoting relaxation and drowsiness.
2. Rise in blood glucose and insulin
* A carbohydrate-rich meal causes an insulin surge.
* Insulin increases uptake of most amino acids into muscle, leaving relatively more tryptophan in the bloodstream.
* More tryptophan enters the brain, increasing serotonin and melatonin synthesis, which can promote sleepiness.
3. Circadian rhythm
* Humans naturally experience a dip in alertness during the early afternoon (around 1–3 pm).
* Eating lunch during this period can amplify sleepiness.
4. Large meal size
* Heavy meals require more digestive activity and are more likely to cause post-meal fatigue than smaller meals.
5. Poor sleep
* In medical students, sleep deprivation is often the biggest contributor.
* After a meal, reduced stimulation allows the accumulated sleep debt to become obvious.
What should they do?
* ✅ Eat smaller, more frequent meals instead of very heavy ones.
* ✅ Reduce refined carbohydrates (large portions of rice, sweets, sugary drinks).
* ✅ Include protein and fiber with meals to reduce glucose spikes.
* ✅ Drink adequate water.
* ✅ Take a 5–10 minute walk after meals instead of sitting or lying down.
* ✅ If studying, consider tea or coffee after lunch (not late in the evening if it affects nighttime sleep).
* ✅ Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night, especially before exams.
