The claim that Pelosi and Schumer were behind the 71-minute delay of the National Guard during the January 6 Capitol attack is baseless. Pelosi, as House Speaker, has no command over the National Guard, and neither does Schumer. In the midst of the chaos, both leaders pleaded for military aid, including the National Guard.

A memo on January 4, 2021, by then-Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller to the Army Secretary set constraints on the D.C. National Guard for the January 5-6 protests. It didn't outright disarm them but limited their actions. For instance, without Miller's personal say-so, the D.C. National Guard couldn't detain, frisk, or even approach protesters. They also needed Miller's nod before bearing arms during those rallies, or even donning body armor and helmets. Such constraints hampered the National Guard's swift reaction on January 6.

General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, testified that it was former VP Mike Pence who directed the National Guard to the Capitol.

The National Guard's delayed deployment resulted from a mix of miscommunication, apprehensions about the visual impact of deploying troops, and a convoluted mesh of conflicting authorities.
