@melissasavenko@tullyfur I agree, it’s not for us either. Unfortunately the trades are riddled with inherent risk and always will be. Theres mitigation strategies in place. However there will be a learning curve. Just part of the deal for us, no free lunches. We’re not big fans of the EPA or DOE.
@melissasavenko@tullyfur The stuff we’ve been working on is flammable and toxic to breathe. Regular folks just weren’t aware of it. Precautions must be taken and it’s somewhat dangerous regardless. There are additional precautions and training requirements for A2L. We don’t anticipate huge changes.
@investandcreate@melissasavenko The efficiency is very high, up to 22 seer. Proportional control is also excellent. However capacity is a limitation. Not enough ductless tonnage in most of these system to run large commercial applications. Ductless is ideal for residential and light commercial retrofit.
@ThugstaNuffin @melissasavenko That’s not true every where. In Texas there is a rebate for installation of newer higher Efficiency systems. The rebate basically offsets the increased cost of higher efficiency systems. It will not offset future repair costs.
@JohnMurphySC @melissasavenko That was about 10 years ago with R-22. They just made the requirement for efficiency changes a couple years ago. It’s regional and still being implemented. That’s a DOE thing.
@JohnMurphySC @RickFelten @melissasavenko@itsplanetjen The refrigerants from the last two transitions are
Still available. Over time they phase them out and it just drives the cost up insanely high, but they will be available for many years even decades afterwards.
@melissasavenko@tullyfur The larger concern of flammability is mostly for contractors servicing or replacing the equipment. It’s an issue when torch work is done for copper or aluminum brazing. This stuff isn’t just going to explode randomly any more than the gas tank in your car while you drive.
@BryonTRussell@melissasavenko The increase cost is coming from the DOE requiring higher SEER/EER standards. The newer refrigerants are already in circulation and are make blends with compounds present today.
@GrulkeLamonte@melissasavenko That was said about ductless 20 years ago and the use case and application haven’t changed much. Ductless still has refrigerant piping and it is often installed in inaccessible places depending on applications.
@ncimess @melissasavenko Not any more flammable than R-22 with mineral oil. These people want to change refrigerants every 10-15 years, it’s an headache. This A2L change applies to larger tonnage equipment as well. Air cooled chillers , large tonnage RTU’s , etc .
@TheKelseyMcR What were you charged and for what service exactly? This is super
vauge. I’m a licensed contractor in Texas, maybe I can provide some insight. I know it’s a different state but Texas has reciprocity agreements with S Carolina and Georgia. It’s a similar market.
