Monsoon onset declared over Mumbai today, 23rd June: IMD (India Meteorological Department)

It says, "The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Maharashtra including Mumbai, remaining parts of Telangana & Odisha, some more parts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand & Bihar, today the 23rd June, 2026.

Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some parts of North Arabian Sea & Gujarat, some more parts of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, some parts of Madhya Pradesh during next 2-3 days; remaining parts of Jharkhand & Bihar, some parts of Uttar Pradesh during subsequent 3-4 days."

His name was Neeraj Grover.

He was 26 years old. A television executive at Synergy Adlabs in Mumbai. He was working on the Indian version of Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader and helping cast a Mahabharat television series.

He had been helping Maria Susairaj, an aspiring Kannada actress, get a foothold in the industry. He arranged auditions for her and helped her settle into Mumbai.

On the night of May 6 2008 he went to her apartment in Malad to help her settle into her new flat.

Maria’s fiance Jerome Matthew was a naval officer posted in Kochi. He called her that evening and heard a male voice in the background. He took a flight to Mumbai without telling her.

He reached her apartment the next morning.

He walked into the bedroom and found Neeraj there. An argument broke out. Jerome picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed Neeraj multiple times. Neeraj died inside the apartment.

Maria then went shopping.

She bought bags, curtains, bedsheets, air freshener and another knife. Together they cut Neeraj’s body into pieces and packed them into bags.

A building security guard later testified that he watched them load the bags into a car.

That evening they drove to a forested area near Manor in Palghar district. They bought petrol on the way and burned the bags in the jungle before returning to Mumbai the same night.

Meanwhile Neeraj’s family kept calling his phone. They filed a missing persons complaint. His friends immediately suspected Maria.

Police questioned her. She claimed Neeraj had left for a party and forgotten his phone.

Forensic teams found fresh blood stains and newly purchased curtains and bedsheets inside the apartment.

The breakthrough came from a phone call.

While driving to dispose of the body Maria accidentally answered Neeraj’s phone. Police traced the tower location. It placed her on the road to Manor. Not in Dadar where she claimed to have been shopping.

Jerome and Maria were arrested in May 2008.

In July 2011 a Mumbai court convicted Jerome Matthew of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced him to ten years in prison. The court said there was no premeditation.

Maria Susairaj was acquitted of murder but convicted of destruction of evidence and sentenced to three years. Because she had already spent that time in jail she was released the next day.

Both were fined Rs 50000 payable to Neeraj Grover’s family.

Neeraj’s family said the punishment did not match the crime.

A 26 year old was stabbed, dismembered and burned in a forest. The court found it was not murder.

Her name was Priyadarshini Mattoo.

She was 25 years old. A Kashmiri Pandit who had fled militancy in Srinagar with her family and rebuilt her life in Delhi. She was in the final semester of her LLB at Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre.

Her senior in college was a man named Santosh Kumar Singh. His father was JP Singh, a senior IPS officer who would go on to become Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police.

Santosh became obsessed with Priyadarshini. She rejected him. He began stalking her.

She filed FIR after FIR. The police did nothing. Her father went to the university. The university did nothing. She was eventually given a personal security officer. The stalking continued anyway.

On the morning of January 23, 1996, her security officer did not show up for duty.

Santosh knocked on the door of her uncle’s house in Vasant Kunj where she was staying. A servant saw him enter. What followed took less than an hour.

She was found under her bed. Strangled with an electric wire. Her face battered beyond recognition with a motorcycle helmet. She had 19 injuries on her body. DNA evidence linked Santosh directly to the crime. His fractured helmet visor was recovered. Witnesses placed him at the scene.

In 1999, Additional Sessions Judge GP Thareja delivered his verdict.

He said in open court I am convinced he is the man who committed the crime.

Then he acquitted him.

He said the CBI had fabricated the DNA evidence. He gave Santosh the benefit of the doubt.

The Delhi High Court later called this verdict a perverse approach that murdered justice and shocked the judicial conscience.

It took public outrage, media pressure and her aged father appearing on television for years before the High Court took up the appeal in 2006. Within 42 days, the High Court convicted Santosh and sentenced him to death.

The Supreme Court upheld the conviction in 2010 but reduced the sentence to life imprisonment.

He has since been granted multiple paroles. In 2019, he was given parole to appear for his LLM examination.

The man who raped and murdered Priyadarshini Mattoo is studying law in prison.

Her father fought for 10 years to get a conviction the judge already had in his hands in 1999.

The verdict said police were reluctant to act on her complaints because Santosh’s father was a senior officer. It said junior staff do not react to complaints against the relatives of their fraternity.

She filed FIR after FIR. Nobody moved.

Not until she was dead.
