Music Artists Are Often Broke Despite Their Lavish Public Image — Singer Akon Reveals
Senegalese-American singer Akon has challenged the common belief that successful musicians are always wealthy, stating that many artists struggle financially despite their fame and lavish public image.
Speaking during an interview with Hip Hop Eye, Akon explained that while the music industry generates substantial revenue, the biggest earnings often go to professionals behind the scenes rather than the performers themselves.
According to him, “In the music industry, the artist is the last to get paid. He is the broke one but he is the most famous. If you want to be broke and famous, be the artist.”
He added that those seeking greater financial success in the entertainment industry should consider roles such as producers, songwriters, managers, agents, and attorneys, noting that “if you want to make real money go to other sectors of music business” because there are numerous opportunities behind the scenes where people can “really maximise” their earnings.
