I found Chapter 13 of #6thextinction to wrap up the novel in an impactful way. Kolbert described conservation efforts to save endangered species. This shows that while humans have caused many species to go extinct, we are also trying to do these species justice. #ees028

It kind-of terrifies me that human beings are susceptible to the unknown and can one day go extinct. Or even go extinct through fault of their own. However, I believe that our species has advanced so much that we have the potential to persist. #ees028 #6thextinction

Throughout the novel, Kolbert focused on many aspects of human nature, both good and bad. In this chapter, I believe that Kolbert focused on the natural tendency of humans to want action and exploration. Unfortunately, this will ultimately be our downfall. #ees028 #6thextinction

I found Chapter 12 of #6thextinction to be very enlightening. It was interesting to read about the mapping of the Neanderthal genome so that humans (Homo sapiens) can one day be compared to Neanderthals. The use of DNA fragments reminded me of de-extinction! #ees028

The distinct yet similar nature of Neanderthals and Homo sapiens is fascinating. This reminds me of #23andMe, where some people receive "Neanderthal" in their ancestry and can see where Neanderthals and Homo sapiens supposedly interbred in their lineage. #ees028 #6thextinction

I believe we have an obligation to save threatened or endangered animals that are threatened with extinction today. We have the ability to protect these species and I believe we should focus on these species before we lose more. #deeextinction #ees028

It was super interesting reading about de-extinction in the context of the mammoth. There is a current desire to "revive" the mammoth and restore it to its natural habitat. However, "de-extinction" is not exactly what the term suggests. #deextinction #ees028

Many view de-extinction as a true revival because they feel as if they are obligated to do justice to these species that were lost due to human-driven activities. However, it is not truly a revival of the species. #deextinction #ees028

The Tasmanian tiger was thought to have gone extinct years ago. The last Tasmanian tiger died in a zoo and it has not been seen in the wild since, although there have been alleged sightings. #tasmaniantiger #ees028

I appreciate the scientist's careful wording when discussing the possibility of finding the Tasmanian tiger in the wild. She seems hopeful, but addresses the possibility that the Tasmanian tiger has been and remains extinct. #tasmaniantiger #ees028
