"25 Dec.: natus Christus in Betleem Judeae." Translation: "December 25, Christ born in Bethlehem, Judea." This inscription was found in an ancient list of Roman bishops and is the earliest proof of a celebration of Christmas. The inaugural celebration happened in Rome OTD in 336.
@DrPnygard Well, I'm still breathing. I'll be glad to see the end of this year, anyway. Funny how a mostly meaningless chronological event has a feeling of finality.
How are you?
""Never sleep with anyone whose troubles are worse than your own"
Probably advice I wouldn't have followed in my youth, but rarely have I heard better. This is wisdom
"Never sleep with anyone whose troubles are worse than your own." – #RossMacdonald, born Kenneth Millar in Los Gatos, CA (1915-1983). Wrote a series of mystery novels starring private detective Lew Archer, a character named after Sam Spade's partner in #TheMalteseFalcon (1930).
I now see even marketing as largely a dead end unless you're well established or joining a big agency.
It was fun, it was challenging, it eventually made me a good amount of money! But I'm done; snideology has retired. If you need me, I'll be the third fisherman on the left
@DrPnygard he felt the wings of destiny behind him in part because of all the failed assassination attempts, but he was cherry-picking to do it because he (and his lieutenants) created a sound defense-in-depth method for preventing them. hitler's security is a really fascinating subject
@DrPnygard if you'll forgive some paraphrasing, i wish this had not happened in my time, but all i can do is to decide what i'll do with the time i'm given.
the fight isn't over. not even the wisest can see all ends!
(you get one free kick in my butt for this one)
@DrPnygard I thought you might get a kick out of this. Howard Shore is pure genuis; I honestly think he more than anyone else involved in the LOTR films captured the story Tolkein was trying to tell. Greatest film score ever!

Today in 1724, German composer & musician Johann Sebastian #Bach led the first performance of the chorale cantata "Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir, BWV 130" for the feast of archangel Michael, based on Paul Eber's hymn in twelve stanzas.
@Imwintersmom wait, what happened? haha i am SO out of the loop, seriously, i sometimes go days before i remember to check news -- and most of what i get is like science and history news LOL google knows what i'll click on better than i probably do
@DrPnygard the hobbit is such a fun, light read compared to LOTR. for me, lotr felt like reading genuinely interesting if at times ponderous history books while the hobbit felt more like an anecdote taken from what i suppose would be the middle earth equivalent of gibbon's decline & fall
This is so true. But, as always, that knowledge is power.
We can make a conscious effort to stay open. Essential if we want to keep participating and making a contribution.
But damn if it's not scary finding yourself back at the beginning of things 😱
#GeneRoddenberry pitched his story of 23rd-century interstellar exploration as a sort of outer space Western, and OTD in 1966 #StarTrek made its TV debut. The series was cancelled just three seasons in, but reruns in syndication proved that the show would live long and prosper.
