I'm no Democratic socialist, but yesterday the New York City Council approved $1.5 million in funding to help keep pets with their families.

This includes much needed funding for spay/neuter surgeries supporting pet owners, rescuers and TNR volunteers.

It also included funding for pet food pantries to make sure no family has to choose between feeding themselves or feeding a pet.

This is the kind of investment that can help reduce stray animal populations and help people be better pet owners. It's something that could be done all across the country.

If this is "socialism," sign me up. 🐾

Today’s Supreme Court decision effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities - so long as they do it under the guise of “partisanship” rather than explicit “racial bias.” And it serves as just one more example of how a majority of the current Court seems intent on abandoning its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and protecting the rights of minority groups against majority overreach.

The good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - not just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level.

Regardless of whether it’s all talk, when the leader of our country expresses plainly genocidal intent, everyone has to do something.

This teenager saved his neighbor's dog from drowning in a freezing pond. This is Bernard. His family contacted emergency services right away, but high school senior Hugh Pinneo got to Bernard first. Hugh said he's "just glad I acted that day and saved the dog's life." We are too. 12/10 for all

My tumor has not grown at all and I'm tolerating it well for the most part. I also have metastatic breast cancer. I hope I live to see him gone! Best wishes to you!
