Welcome! This account will be dedicated to snow day forecasts, statistics, and related topics. For now, focus will be greatest in select counties of the NoVa region, namely APS and FCPS.
One decade ago, the last of #snowmageddon exited the DC area leaving the region buried under 1.5 to 3 feet. With the help of a second snowstorm just three days later, some area schools remained closed/delayed for over 7 days straight (10 in PWCS!). #OTD
#OnThisDay in 2016: Snowfall coinciding with the evening commute caused major backups known by many as #carmageddon 2.0. Although impacts were widespread, this ended up just being a precursor to something much greater 😉 #closeFCPS
Details for tomorrow: A brief period of snow is likely around 7 or 8am accumulating to C-1". Then sleet/freezing rain around 1pm with some ice accumulation likely (especially areas north and west). Plain rain by ~6pm region-wide. Would expect to see an Advisory.
Thinking for Saturday remains unchanged: Minor accumulation (<1 in) of snow/sleet from dc to the north and west before a changeover to rain mid-afternoon. Will update as needed.
This the most likely scenario for Saturday in the #DCarea:
A short period of snow in the mid-morning hours, followed by wintry mix in the early-afternoon. Mix changes to rain by mid-afternoon.
The earlier this system can arrive, the better the chances for accumulation 🌨️
Some weather apps currently suggest a 3-5 inch snow event for the dc metro region on Saturday. While this cannot be ruled out, it is an unlikely scenario at this time.
Not enough information on road conditions to issue exact probabilities, but based on available information, FCPS is most likely to start on-time. A near certainty APS does so as well.
Low to mid 20s tomorrow morning... be sure to bundle up!
