A project seeking to understand the neurophysiology of cold tolerance in snow flies (Chionea). Tweeting mainly about alpine #snowinsects. Run by Tuthill lab @UW
We are now partnered with Adventure Scientists (@AdvScientists), which mobilizes outdoor enthusiasts to collect scientific data. We aim to study behavior, physiology, and genetics of snow flies from across the globe. Read more and sign up here:

Still not enough snow for snow flies out there, so started a little side project in the meantime to make everything as fun as collecting snow flies through employee gamification. https://t.co/3Z0HfBIUAD
Here is a helpful cheat sheet of the daily activity patterns of foraging invertebrates on Mt. Rainier. Based on summer time observations, which is why there are no snow flies.

@MKinMT @sydcannings1 @BugEric yes, we love receiving snow fly specimens from all over! preferably alive, but preserved is fine. we will sequence them and tell you the species. more details at https://t.co/8YEcu5sm6C
A dramatic change in the weather is expected this weekend, bringing not just rain but snow to the park. By Saturday night, the snow level is forecasted to drop to 4000 ft, well below the elevation of Paradise at 5400 ft. 1/4

Snow fly season is over, so now it's control experiment season! We are now looking for local volunteers @UW to help us collect other crane flies: these are the big endearing goofballs that resemble an oversized mosquito. Drop us a note if you happen to trap one.
we thought that snow flies had retired for the season, but looks like there are still some late season stragglers relishing the winter conditions!

We received our first shipment of snow flies from the Yukon this week! We are running behavioral experiments right now to measure their cold tolerance. After that, we will use DNA barcoding to determine the species of each individual animal. https://t.co/jn7wq7z5LW
