"Congresswoman, what do you make of Donald Trump saying that Americans who oppose data centers are backwards and poor?" reporter Pablo Manríquez asked Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

"Oh, I mean, how about we put one in Mar-a-Lago?" she said. "I love that. Let's put a data center up in Mar-a-Lago and we'll see how backwards and poor he is in response to that."

We'd pay good money to watch a reporter ask Trump directly about this idea. Of course, he would never in a million years consider allowing a noisy, ugly, electricity and water-guzzling data center to go up near his beloved "Southern White House."

No, shouldering the cost of the AI revolution is something that Republicans expect the working class to endure while the oligarchs reap all of the profits.

Trump's exact quote, written on Truth Social earlier today, was: "The only reason that communities throughout the U.S.A. should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor."

"If they want to be successful and rich, with far lower taxes and jobs all over the place, let Data Reign," he added. "The good news is that there are plenty of other places that want them. If we kill the Golden Goose, you will only have yourselves to blame. China could not be happier with this anti Data Center movement. Actually, they can’t believe it is happening! President DJT"

Unfortunately for him, his party, and the tech billionaires propping up the MAGA movement, data centers are about as popular with the American people as radioactive sludge. According to a Gallup poll conducted in March, 71% of Americans oppose construction of AI data centers in their area. Of that percentage, 48% "strongly" oppose them. Only 26% favor them.

As for Trump's suggestion that China will benefit from the backlash to data centers, who cares? The working class can't afford groceries, gas, healthcare, or rent thanks to right-wing policies that have steadily dismantled the middle class since the Reagan era. If you want Americans to care about the threats posed by an ascendant China, you have to first improve their quality of life and give them a stable foundation upon which to look towards the future. Until then, they have no time for national adversaries. They're just trying to survive.

What's more, Trump doesn't genuinely care about China. He and the rest of the top 1% of the 1% don't even believe in nation-states. They see themselves as part of a global elite with money socked away in every corner of the globe. His family's future isn't tethered to the fate of the United States, which is why he's ripping it to pieces for spare parts.
