Even if a message or request doesn’t seem suspicious, always double-check its legitimacy. Verify through trusted sources before ever sharing personal information.

RCPD will NEVER request payment over the phone, ask for a money transfer, or payment in gift cards. Never make a payment over the phone or electronically to someone or some entity that you do not know. Wichita police are asking the community for help finding a mother and her son.

Police say 29-year-old Julia Leary and her son, 3-year-old Daniel Bamford, were last seen in the 1300 block of west Lotus Street in southwest Wichita.

The Wichita Police Department needs your help locating 2-year-old Araceli Gonzales, who is believed to be in imminent danger.

Araceli was reportedly taken by force by her father, Saul Gonzales-Diaz, following a domestic violence incident in the 4200 block of E. Boston. It is believed that he is armed and dangerous.

The suspect is believed to be driving a white Dodge Ram displaying Kansas license plate 446 MSL.

If you see Araceli, the suspect, or the vehicle, do not approach. Call 911 immediately with any information regarding their location.

🚨Rental Scam Alert🚨

Looking for a house or apartment online? Be careful. Scammers are posting fake rental listings and convincing people to send money before they've ever seen the property.

A common rental scam starts when someone finds a rental on social media or an online marketplace. After making contact by text, the "landlord" asks for an application fee, then sends a fake lease and requests a deposit or first month's rent through Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, or another payment app. Once the money is sent, the victim later finds out the property isn't actually available or the person never owned it.

Protect yourself:

Never send an application fee, deposit, or rent before meeting the owner or leasing representative in person.
Always tour the property before signing a lease or sending any money.
Be cautious if you're asked to pay through Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, or another payment app before seeing the property.
If something doesn't feel right or the deal seems too good to be true, trust your instincts and walk away.
If you've been the victim of a rental scam, call 911 to file a police report. Please share this post to help prevent others from becoming victims.

Count the Cash before you hand it over!

If you're selling something through Facebook Marketplace or any other online marketplace, don't rush the transaction.

Scammers may hand you folded cash or an envelope, hoping you'll hand over your item before checking the money. By the time you realize the cash is counterfeit or not the full amount, they're already gone.

Before you hand over your item here are a few safety tips:

Count the money.

Check that it's the full agreed-upon amount.

Look over the bills before the buyer leaves.

If something doesn't feel right, don't complete the sale.

Meet in a public, well-lit location whenever possible, and consider using any Wichita Police Department substation for added peace of mind.

Back in March, while flying home to Kansas from a speaking event in Vermont, I happened to be seated next to a woman named Tara.

Some of you may remember the Facebook post I shared afterward.

Tara told me about her son, Officer Ryan Morton, who was killed in the line of duty in Missouri eight years ago. She also told me about Ryan’s safe, which had remained locked since his death.

Before we left that flight, Tara handed me one of Ryan’s challenge coins.

I shared her story with all of you, asking whether someone might be able to help the family get the safe open. The response was overwhelming. So many people commented, sent messages, offered advice, and volunteered to help at no cost.

But one person continued checking in with me.
His name is Justin, and he lives in Wichita. 😌

Justin kept asking questions and trying to learn what could be done. Eventually, I connected him with Tara and Ryan’s brother, Derek. After that, I stepped back and gave them space to work through everything.

Over the past several weeks, I found myself wondering whether the safe had ever been opened. I worried a little that maybe the momentum had faded and the help I had offered never became a reality.

Then, just moments ago, I received a text from Tara with several pictures.

The safe is finally open. 🥹

After eight years, Ryan’s family was able to see what had been locked inside all this time. And the person who stayed with it and helped make it happen was Justin from Wichita.

I’ll admit, I became emotional when I saw her message.🥲

Ryan’s challenge coin happened to be sitting near me when the text came through. I picked it up and just took in the moment.

What began as a chance conversation between two strangers on an airplane became thousands of people caring about a family they had never met. Then one person kept showing up until the job was done.

I’m honored to have played a small role in connecting them, but JUSTIN deserves so much credit for staying with it.

With Tara’s permission, I’m sharing this update with all of you because so many have continued asking whether the safe was ever opened.

Tara has graciously allowed all of us to share in this moment with her family.

After eight years, the safe is open. 🥹💙
