A Nobel-winning MIT economist published a terrifying paper called "Automation and Repression"

As AI and automation replace human labor, wealth concentrates heavily in the hands of a tiny group of capital owners. Inequality skyrockets.

When inequality hits a critical mass, workers realize they are being crushed and the threat of a popular revolt spikes.

Faced with that threat, the ruling elite are forced to make a choice.

They can redistribute the wealth through taxes, or they can use force to keep people down.

It doesn't matter what humanity does or doesn't do.

It doesn't matter if there's no new oil and gas or even if impossible net zero is achieved.

It doesn't matter if there's a Great Awakening of human consciousness and everyone pulls together with all their might.

Forget degrowth and depopulation, it wouldn't matter if every human being on earth suddenly vanished.

This planet is rocketing to its equilibrium temperature far beyond the limits of human survivability, simply because the GHGs already in the air commit the Earth to ~10°C above preindustrial after all feedbacks have run their course (James Hansen). Humans will surely be gone before 4°C and very possibly long before 4°C.

There's no way to get the GHGs out of the air. There's no way to get the heat out of the oceans. There's no way to stop the ice sheets melting. Sea level rise on its own is an apocalypse.

Nothing can stop this planet blasting through 2°C global in the 2040s, which is 3°C+ on land, up from 1.8°C now. Nothing can stop societies collapsing over the next 5, 10, 15 years.

The objective isn't to stop new oil or cut emissions by 45% by 2030 or achieve net zero. It's all just fossil fuel hopium propaganda to maintain false hope and shareholder dividends.

The true objective of humanity is to survive this event as long as possible with the least possible suffering. There's nothing else. It might seem that there are other options but that's just an illusion.
