@JMilesColeman The late 1940s seem to have seen a brief resurgence for the once-dominant Philadelphia GOP machine (they swept all 6 of the city's House seats in the '46 red wave). However, the Dems finally flipping the mayor's office in 1951 seem to have buried the Philly GOP for good.

@JMilesColeman Lowcountry whites were also wealthier than those in the upcountry, which further explains their political split during that era. (The lowcountry was the strongest for Thurmond in 1948, while Truman did best Upstate.)

@JMilesColeman A lot of those red counties in the lowcountry still had overwhelmingly white electorates at the time despite being majority-Black in terms of overall population, meaning that they cast much fewer votes than land area would suggest.
