Niblett’s Summer of Sex - a personal response ...

I’m a member of @WRNDerbyshire and I’m a survivor of long-term domestic abuse with coercive control. I’ve been following Samantha Niblett MP @SamanthaNiblet4 and her Summer of Sex campaign since her launch in April this year. She has spoken openly about being exposed to pornography at age 10 and more recently about watching pornography on Cindy Gallop’s MakeLoveNotPorn website who she is working with alongside with John Lewis. She did mention lifelong sex education, preventing abuse and talking about consent, but mostly she talked about pornography and sex toys. But in my opinion pornography is harmful to women and girls even if women make and distribute that pornography.

This week she shamelessly shoehorned Male Violence Against Women and Girls (MVAWG) into her so-called sexual "health" campaign. On BBC’s Woman’s Hour https://t.co/Um99MerTlA and Sky News https://t.co/v2shLGKQQl she made the bold claim that by empowering “people” we would get less sexual violence and that by reducing shame, guilt and embarrassment we would make it harder for perpetrators of sexual abuse and violence to do what they do.

My emotions were activated, I was taken back in time to my abuser, my heart was racing, my anxiety was going through the roof. I don’t think Niblett has a clue what she is talking about. There is no consent in domestic abuse. Sexual coercion is high, sexual grooming is high. You cannot please an abuser, his ‘blue balls’ can never be satisfied. You are verbally abused as a prude, sex is on his terms, you have sex when he wants it, how he wants. An MP declaring sex toys are for everyone and there is no shame, guilt or embarrassment is not going to help any woman living with domestic abuse. Sex toys are used to groom women living with domestic abuse.

Niblett quotes UNESCO who do indeed promote lifelong sex education from early childhood. UNESCO defines early childhood from birth to eight year olds. Cindy Galop who Niblett is working with advocates for sex education for 0-18 year olds. Babies and young children are not sexual and are not competent to consent. Niblett may not have boundaries and had no one looking out for her safeguarding as a 10 year old but we shouldn’t let her pass this trauma on to our children.

Sex toys will not prevent rape, sexual violence or domestic abuse. Pretending they will is embarrassing and I have no doubt Niblett is only focusing on this now to legitimise her campaign due to ongoing criticism.

Victims do need help learning that what has happened to them is not their shame to carry, their perpetrator carries the shame.
