[Politics of Protest, Development and Social Change @SOASProtest]

We’re back for summer 2022! We discuss the past, present and future of global protest, from Black Lives Matter and the climate mobilisations to fourth wave feminism and the anti-war movement. How can change happen and what does it look like? Join us! https://t.co/jsm8O9Grg5

“We’ve got to fight now, otherwise we will fade into irrelevance.”

@RMTunion’s Mick Lynch speaks to Tribune about why the cost-of-living crisis is a defining moment for the trade union movement. https://t.co/CJcPr08ZCv

[Dave Ward @DaveWardGS]

BT made £1.3bn, gave £750m to shareholders and the CEO got £3.5m.

We have members using foodbanks.

Today BT announced £400m profit for 1/4 year.

Tomorrow our members strike for the first time since 1987 and have been subjected to extreme intimidation.

RT if you back them.

[Ben See @ClimateBen]

Scientists expect dire global warming of 1.4/1.5°C by 2026 heralding the final collapse of major ecosystems, extreme crop-wrecking weather, rapid mass extinction, and yet more warming with vicious feedbacks, and yet media ignore their calls to abolish perpetual economic growth.🧵

[Politics of Protest, Development and Social Change @SOASProtest]

‘They attacks strikes and they attack protests because they know change is coming.’ Absolutely right.

[Jeremy Corbyn @jeremycorbyn]

The Tories never miss an opportunity to make it harder for ordinary people to come together to stand up for themselves.

They attacks strikes and they attack protests because they know change is coming.

People have had enough of everything going up apart from their pay.

It was in April - May 2022 in India & Pakistan. The extreme #heatwave a LST collected on April 29 shows max value exceeding 62°C/143°F. The world was silent because it was in global south.

Now the world seems wake up when Europe now hit with 42⁰C /107.6⁰F.

With record-breaking 40ºC+ temperatures now recorded, don't forget:

Just 100 companies are responsible for 71% of global emissions.

This is a capitalist crisis and only system change can avert climate catastrophe.

[Tribune @tribunemagazine]

The world's top 1% is responsible for double the emissions of the entire bottom half of the planet. The conclusion is clear – to fight climate change, we have to fight the ruling class.

Royal Mail made £758,000,000 in profit, handed £400,000,000 to shareholders, and paid £2,000,000+ to their two CEOs.

But then they offer workers 2% – a massive real terms pay cut.

That's why CWU members today voted to strike and it's why I'll join them on the picket line ✊🏽

[Matto Mildenberger @mmildenberger]

Been reading more and more takes that climate bill failed because of shifting public opinion: e.g. the NYT "reported" this week (without empirical evidence!) that the public has soured on climate as the economy weakened. Nonsense. A short 🧵 1/

We’ve begun! So excited to be teaching this course and already all sorts of interesting questions and discussion raised so far. Just finding a rhythm, and looking forward to getting into the issues! #protest @soassummer

UK billionaires could give everybody in the country a £5,000 payment and still be richer than they were before the pandemic

It’s time to end this “cost of greed crisis” - tax wealth

[Extinction Rebellion Bristol @XRBristol]

Sound advice.

[David Wallace-Wells @dwallacewells]

“‘Even the most pessimistic models didn't expect that the cold British Isles would reach 40 degrees, and that's happening before our eyes,’ he said, ‘faster and more powerfully than what we forecasted.’” https://t.co/7il3b2O6SN

[John Beattie @JohnRossBeattie]

Had the pleasure of interviewing Mick Lynch of the @RMTunion last night - his argument is pretty straightforward. Large company profits should be distributed to workers, and 7 to 9 percent rise would seal the deal in this dispute.

[Solidarity Detainee Support (SDS) @sdetsup]

Incredible moment at Brook House yesterday - people inside the detention centre chanting "Set Us Free!" and everyone on the outside chanting "Set Them Free!" back.

We make connections and build solidarity across borders and walls.

BREAKING 🚨📉: UK workers will experience the WORST fall in wages out of all the G7 countries:

🇺🇸 0.6%
🇫🇷 0.5%
🇯🇵 -0.1%
🇨🇦 -2.3%
🇩🇪 -3.0%
🇮🇹 -3.8%

🇬🇧 -6.2%

Britain urgently needs a pay rise.

I wrote this for @tribunemagazine on why the Sri Lankan protesters swimming in the President's pool are demanding debt cancellation from Western banks and hedge funds, not just a better government

“The general public know they’re being mugged. Profits are through the roof, corporate pay is obscene and the only ones being asked to tighten their belts are working class people.”
