Comments to this confirm everything I talked about in the very post (innumeracy, moving goal posts, "GDP doesn't matter").

But Serbia's relative outperformance isn't just reflected in GDP numbers.

1) Serbia has created more new jobs (%) than Croatia since Croatia joined the EU in 2013.
2) Croatia is more in debt than Serbia
3) Croatia received about 1.5 billion EUR annually, which was about 2% of its GDP from the EU, while Serbia received only about 200 million EUR annually from the EU in the same period.

Serbia got less "free money", borrowed less, yet managed to create more new jobs and grow its economy faster than Croatia since Croatia joined the EU.

There were a couple of people saying Serbia would have done even better if it was in the EU during this time. This would mean that Croatia's underperformance isn't due to the EU, but to Serbia's better governance and leadership.

Pro-EU Serbians struggle both with data and with basic economic literacy.

Most DENY a very easily provable fact that since Croatia joined the EU in 2013 (while Serbia still has not), Serbia's GDP grew faster than Croatia's.

Since 2013 Croatia's economy grew about 94% cumulative.

During the same time, Serbia's economy grew about 122%.

The few that can do basic math then start moving the goal post: "Yes, but Croatia is still richer."

So are Switzerland, France and any number of countries. In order to catch up Serbia has to grow faster than Croatia. There is no mathematical way for Serbia to catch up with Croatia's GDP per capita without growing faster than Croatia.

This is happening with Serbia being OUT OF THE EU, while Croatia is IN THE EU. Absolutely zero reason to believe that Serbia joining the EU increase Serbia's GDP. On the contrary: reason to believe Serbia's growth would slow down after joining the EU, thus never catching up with Croatia, much less with anyone else.

Serbia's economic growth is related to foreign investment from China, Turkey, UAE, Russia. If Serbia were part of the EU, none of it would have been allowed, in exchange for some "free money" promises, which would have been withheld until Serbia does any number of things, including recognizing Kosovo, joining NATO, etc.

The comparison with Croatia is most relevant for Serbia, because they are close in size and share a common history. Unlike Poland or Estonia, which also joined the EU much earlier.
