I bring him problems with solutions *for him to choose from*. This way, I *give him ownership* and let him feel in control. After a while, he trusts me and gives me more power.

If he *spots your weak points*, he’ll focus on them. If he sees your strengths, he might *feel threatened*. So I play it smart. I follow the *no surprises* rule. I tell him everything before his bosses *find out about it*.

But a smart leader also *knows when to bend*. If I see *negative consequences*, I’m willing to *step back*.

The most difficult challenge, however, is *managing up*. *Managing your relationship with your boss is harder than gaining your team's trust*.

*under-promise, over-deliver*. Work demands usually *boil down to two things*: a lighter workload and better pay. It's easy to ask for, but hard to deliver. That’s why I never make a promise *until I'm certain I can deliver*.

And trust is difficult because *mistrust is the easy option to fall back on*. Most people are warned not to trust anyone. So if I just say "trust me," no one will. The only way is to *walk the talk*. I *keep my promises* and I’m *direct with my instructions*. I follow one rule:
