The concept of apneic oxygenation is not remotely new.

In a study dating back to 1950s, Frumin recruited 8 healthy volunteers to undergo apneic oxygenation with passive high-flow O2 delivered via ETT during surgery.

-Mean duration of apnea was 41 minutes
-Mean lowest saturation was 99%
-Mean lowest pH 6.88
-Mean highest PaCO2 was 166

Surprisingly, though often mentioned, in this study Ketamine +/- Midaz was one of the lesser associations with peds sedations for laryngospasm. Others like airway procedures, URI, younger age and some propofol combinations had higher prevalence.
