Bashar Al-Assad was far from being a perfect leader, and I’ve stated my criticisms of his former Government many times.

However, the current turmoil in Syria really gets to the heart of why so many of us believed the fall of the Ba’athist Socialist State was a tragedy.

The Assad family did not enact major land redistribution, which I believe was a mistake, but they did utilize methods of central economic planning such as petroleum subsidies & state issued fuel prices in order to keep gas prices down & spur economic development.

After the Assad Government fell the economy was liberalized, which is a fancy way of saying it was handed over to private interests who don’t give two shits about the Syrian people.

Over 100 state run companies were privatized & the IMF is now working directly in Syria’s Finance Ministry, molding their “economic recovery” in a way that is beneficial to the profits of Western/Gulf corporations and banks.

Now people are being hit with a 40% increase in fuel prices at a time when the country is divided into factions & the central Government lacks the ability & the will to unify the country.

Chaos has erupted and Syria now risks falling into the state of anarchy and civil war that Libya did after the overthrow of Gaddafi.

And as with Libya, the main beneficiaries of such a disaster would undoubtably be the US and Israel.

In my view, the people who’s analysis of this conflict can be summarized in two words, “Assad bad” are not giving you the full picture, and those who characterize it as nothing more than a religious conflict are missing the underlying economic situation, including the goals of the US empire in Syria.

No Westminster government has the right to block democracy or undermine the principle that our people will decide their own future.”

The parties diverge on timing and method: the SNP wants a second independence referendum after Scotland’s narrow 2014 vote to remain in the UK; Sinn Féin seeks a vote on Irish reunification; and Plaid Cymru favors independence only in the longer term, with no immediate referendum push.
