Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay on Friday chaired a meeting of the Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Authority at the Secretariat and reviewed preparedness measures for the southwest monsoon.

Officials informed the chief minister that the southwest monsoon, which began over Tamil Nadu on June 4, is expected to bring below-normal rainfall to the state this year, with the India Meteorological Department estimating an 80% probability of deficient rainfall.

Vijay directed all departments and district administrations to remain prepared to handle any disaster situation, stressing that preventing loss of life should be the primary objective.

He instructed district emergency operation centres to function round the clock and ensure the readiness of rescue equipment, first responders and disaster response teams.

He also directed district administrations to keep relief centres ready with basic amenities such as electricity, food and safe drinking water.

The Greater Chennai Corporation and district administrations were asked to respond swiftly to rain-related issues, including waterlogging and fallen trees.

The chief minister further ordered departments to complete desilting of waterbodies, removal of water hyacinth and eviction of encroachments ahead of the northeast monsoon season.
