The time has come: In a few days i'll be closing down this account and shifting entirely over to BlueSky, still findable under my real name or the same @sociolx handle i've been using here
Y'all with the conspiracy theories about vote counts and turnout, you *do* realize we don't have the full popular vote count yet, yes?
You're buying into misinformation sowing doubt in elections—it worked beautifully on the right the past few years, now the left is the target
It's November 5th, 2024. Thousands of men look at their shoe closet, realizing they threw out their dress sneakers bc of my tweets. They only have uncomfortable dress shoes and decide not to walk to the polls. Kamala Harris wins. We now have communism.
If only there was some sort of technology that would allow knowledge to be put into a form that could then appear on a screen or a piece of paper, so that someone who wasn't the one who placed it there could, at a later date, look up what that knowledge was
@OneFineJay@politicalmath On Bowie: Those of us with that last name and who pronounce it exactly the same way as the Maryland town would like to remind everyone that the singer adopted that name as an adult, don't be led astray
@Poochigian When i'm teaching history of the English language i tell my students that there's lots of possible ways to render Beowulf's "Hwæt!", but my headcanon translation is "So check this out…"
@westeawest@garicgymro As a 🇺🇸 speaker who pronounces 'cot' and 'caught' differently (still the case in a minority of North America, but it's a sizable minority), the 🇬🇧 speaker in the video pronounced 'comma' with what is closer to my 'caught' vowel, but Kamala Harris's name uses my 'cot' vowel
@rhuester49 @Wenders112 @RevSarahLocke@mommavestor It must be a beautiful thing, to be able to define your own reality in such a way that it supports your own position.
@rhuester49 @Wenders112 @RevSarahLocke@mommavestor Ah, so you're one of those Christians who believes that they get to command God to behave in their own image!
Coolcoolcool
@rhuester49 @Wenders112 @RevSarahLocke@mommavestor Okay, i'll bite: Who is the government?
I'd always thought it was we the people, who created one in order to form a more perfect union &c.—and i, like the person who started this thread, see my part in that as informed by trying to do what Jesus taught, which is why i vote left
@AnyaM8_ There are even "Think of the example you're setting for the children!" signs at some German intersections
But this varies place to place worldwide—when i go to a new city in the US, first thing i do is observe jaywalking norms and act accordingly, so i don't surprise the drivers
@garicgymro Quoting my 16yo (and i agree): If i asked someone if they had any candy it'd be perfectly fine for them to hand me some chocolate, but if i saw a chocolate bar it'd be okay to say "That candy looks scrumptious" but *much* more appropriate to say "That chocolate looks scrumptious"
@davidbessis@Sisyfuzz@estictry You already got a good response to this, but i'll also point out that math isn't even unique in kids being reduced to tears by not getting it
Just because you or those you know weren't reduced to tears by, say, writing doesn't mean it doesn't happen, and frequently
@davidbessis@Sisyfuzz@estictry That's a problem of pedagogy, though, not a problem with defining a field.
And really, *lots* of fields have trouble defining their central concepts/what they're all about. Math isn't special on this score.
@focusfronting No, you need not pay for it
In fact, you don't even have to have any alcohol available whatsoever at it (and those of us with more than a touch of alcoholism in our family and/or friend groups salute you for it)
