I understand the political incentive to lead with your best number. When GDP is growing, you say so. That's not unique to any one government or party.

But there's a meaningful difference between putting your best foot forward and actively ignoring what the aggregate is hiding.

Sure, GDP was “growing”—largely because the population was growing at a historic pace. GDP per capita, labour productivity, housing capacity, infrastructure throughput: all of it was quietly deteriorating. These weren't obscure metrics. They were flagged, repeatedly, by independent economists, parliamentary budget officers, and Canada's own statistical agencies.

The failure wasn't ignorance. It was the inaction they chose to take, while bragging about the cherry picked “success”…The same data points, recycled in the same speeches, while the structural erosion compounded beneath them. Perhaps they thought avoiding it would buy them more time… but I doubt that.

You can forgive a government for wanting to look good. You can't forgive one for confusing the appearance of good governance with the practice of it.

A man in Canada met up with a doctor at a Tim Horton’s. Not for coffee, but to discuss the option of MAID. The man was suffering from Crohn's disease and depression. The doctor 'evaluated' him outside the coffee shop in a parking lot and decided he was a candidate for MAID.

But here's the even crazier part that I haven't heard the media talk about.

After texting the patient a personal euthanasia plan, the doctor DROVE the man to an industrial morgue, injected him, and killed him. Paperwork done. On to the next one.

Mark Carney's Very Bad, No Good, Absolutely Terrible Week

Some weeks in politics are rough.

A minister says something unfortunate. A policy announcement lands with all the grace of a cinder block. Someone forgets a microphone is on. You know, the normal political mishaps.

Then there are weeks where it feels like the government backed a truck into a slough, set the parking brake on fire, and spent the next three days insisting everything was proceeding exactly according to plan.

This was one of those weeks.

I spent most of it sitting at my kitchen table reading headlines and wondering whether anyone in Ottawa has ever been forced to balance a household budget, negotiate with a bank manager, or explain to an eleven year old why something can't be purchased because there isn't enough money.

By Wednesday I wasn't shocked anymore. I was taking notes.

The week started with the Canada Strong Fund, which was introduced to Canadians as something resembling a sovereign wealth fund.

Now most people hear "sovereign wealth fund" and think of Norway.
Or Alaska.
Or Alberta's Heritage Fund.

Places that accumulated wealth first and built a fund secnd.

That sequence is generally considered important.

A squirrel gathers nuts before winter. It does not march into a credit union, secure a loan, and then hold a press conference announcing its exciting new acorn savings strategy.

And yet, Ottawa appears determined to convince Canadians that borrowing $25 billion while running deficits somehow qualifies as wealth creation. You have to wonder exactly which universe they function in, because it's certainly NOT this one. 

Apparently if enough consultants approve the branding exercise, debt becomes savings.

To make matters even better, officials acknowledged taxpayers could be looking at roughly $750 million a year in interest costs.

Nothing says "building wealth for future generations" quite like sending three quarters of a billion dollars annually to service debt on the thing that was supposed to create wealth in the first place.

If a neighbour proposed this financial plan over coffee, we'd quietly take away his car keys and the secret flask. 

But that wasn't even the strangest story.
Not by a long shot.

Questions continued swirling around the government's strategic partnership with China and the policing memorandum signed earlier this year.

• Canadians still don't know what's in it.
• MPs still don't know what's in it.
• Reporters still don't know what's in it.
• The government won't release it. 
• The RCMP won't release it. 

Everyone involved seems remarkably committed to protecting Canadians from the dangerous consequences of Canadians knowing what their government signed.

When reporters asked questions, the Prime Minister's response often seemed to involve briskly moving toward another location far removed feom a microphone. 

Which, admittedly, is one strategy.

Most parents recognize this manoeuvre from toddlers carrying permanent markers near freshly painted walls.

Then came the economy.

For reasons known only to political strategists and perhaps several exhausted newsroom editors, Canadians were once again told that older growth figures proved the economy was doing wonderfully.

This messaging campaign ran directly into millions of Canadians who had recently purchased groceries. Or paid rent. Or renewed a mortgage. Or looked for work.

Reality can be stubborn that way.

You can hold a press conference announcing prosperity. The cashier at the grocery store still expects payment.

And that's becoming the recurring theme of the #MarkCarney Liberal government:

• The growing gap between what Canadians are told and what Canadians are experiencing.
• A debt-funded savings account.
Transparency through secrecy.
• Economic success that seems easiest to find in government talking points.

The same reassurances appear over and over. Trust us. Everything is working. Pay no attention to the invoices arriving in the mail.

By this morning the entire week felt less like governing and more like one of those late-night infomercials that becomes increasingly concerning the longer you watch.

The product changes names.
The promises get bigger.
The explanations get stranger.

And somehow the fine print keeps getting smaller.

What made this such a spectacularly bad week wasn't any single controversy.
Governments survive controversies.

What should concern them is patterns.

Because every story seemed to point in the same direction.

More secrecy.🤫
More borrowing.🏦
More slogans.🗣
More branding.👨🏻‍💼
More announcements.📢
And fewer answers.⛔️

At some point voters stop listening to what politicians say and start comparing it to what they see. That is usually the moment political trouble begins.

And judging by this week, @MarkJCarney may have just received an early glimpse of what that looks like.🔮

Around the globe, countries are enacting laws to remove privacy on the internet. Your ability to go online without the government looking over your shoulder is being eroded.
Right now, Canada is trying to push Bill C-22 through as fast as possible. In its current form, the language is broad enough to let them force basically any digital business serving Canadians, including us, into logging up to a year of metadata.

Yet the highest proportion of Canadians since 2017 now say the country is on the right track.

Canada has the world's second-largest land mass, the third-largest proven oil reserves, the largest freshwater supply on the planet, a G7 economy, and a border with the most powerful nation in human history that has made both countries extraordinarily wealthy for generations.

Last night, my wife and I went for a walk post-dinner. As we approached a park, I counted that nearly 50% of the women in the park were veiled. Do people have a right to be concerned about the rapid Islamization of their societies or is this bigoted? Is it ok for millions of non-Muslims to say that they did not sign up to live in an Islamic society when they emigrated to the West or is this bigoted? Suicidal empathy kills. Now we find out, after committee testimony, ethics disclosures, and him voting for Bill C-15, that it looks like a blatant lie. Democracy Watch is straight-up accusing him of breaking the law!
