Chapter 55 hits differently when you look at it from Seju’s side.

I don’t think Seju’s actions in this chapter should be reduced to “she was trying to steal Sumin from Sungji.” To me, Seju was acting from a mixture of love, fear, jealousy, and the knowledge that she understood Sumin better than anyone else. She knew Sumin’s patterns, her emotional avoidance, and the parts of their history that Sungji didn’t fully know.

Was Seju manipulating the situation? Yes. I won’t pretend she wasn’t. She deliberately pushed at Sungji’s insecurities, and she wasn’t a completely selfless person in that conversation. She still loved Sumin, so of course there was a selfish desire underneath it.

But that’s exactly what makes Seju interesting to me.

She wasn’t some heartless villain plotting everything from the beginning. She was a woman who genuinely wanted Sumin to be happy while simultaneously being unable to stop loving her. Those two feelings existed together.

And then Chapter 55 gives us the painful reversal.

For years, Sumin was the one who carried the wound of being betrayed by Seju. But now Sumin becomes the person who betrays someone who genuinely trusts and loves her.

I’m not saying “Sumin betrayed Sungji, therefore Seju’s betrayal was okay.” That’s not my point at all.

My point is that the chapter destroys the simple morality of “Seju = betrayer, Sumin = victim.”

Seju hurt Sumin.

Sumin hurt Sungji.

Both of them were capable of loving someone deeply and still making choices that wounded that person.

And what really gets me is that Sumin finally begins to understand what it feels like to be terrified of losing someone you genuinely love. That is the emotional place Seju has been living in for years.

So for me, Chapter 55 isn’t Seju getting revenge on Sumin.

It’s Sumin finally standing on the other side of the wound.

And that’s why I think Seju deserves more empathy than she usually gets. Not because she was always right, but because she was never just “the bad person who ruined Sumin’s life.”

She was messy, selfish, loving, scared, manipulative, vulnerable, and deeply attached to Sumin all at once.

That’s Seju.

And honestly, that’s what makes her one of the most painfully human characters in WDTFS😭
