It’s 2019, @c_valenzuelab, @agermanidis, and I are at a bar in Bushwick, discussing the creation of a generative storytelling tool and fantasizing about someday hosting a film festival.

Around that time, a new machine learning model for generating photorealistic images was published, sparking the idea for The Orange, a completely generated short film.

Although its capabilities were limited, it was a significant milestone that reinforced our conviction to pursue our vision.

It's 2024 now. We've just hosted our second annual AI Film Festival in NY and LA, and we've watched thousands of generated shorts and stories made with Runway from artists all around the world. It's surreal to see how far we've come since The Orange.

I’m not even sure if it could be considered the first ever fully generated short film, but it's the first and an important one to us that’s worth celebrating.
