Odd that @NewStatesman has chosen to frame @EdConwaySky's front page story as a net zero hit piece, when the article is overwhelmingly...NOT about net zero.
See here: the article with red highlighting the net zero bit, clearly not much at all. But if you're intrigued ...🧵
As I have written about recently for @LabourList - climate as an issue does pass the Makerfield Test b/c the impacts land hardest on constituencies like the PM's. I think this is something the PM gets & hope he continue to follow his instincts on this https://t.co/BaR9Cp1WCc
Really good to hear this from @andyburnham.
We're seeing this response in large part because of amazing work loads of people & organisations have been doing to highlight all the impacts we are seeing - we have been coordinating some of this @RoundOurWayUK
Great to see this from the PM. All summer we've been raising the alarm about this unprecedented heatwave. From 40c heat in classrooms to mums struggling at home to keep cool. We need to adapt today AND mitigate the worst effects of climate change for tomorrow.
And so have been lucky enough to work with so many amazing people and help to tell the stories of how people are being impacts right now. It’s good to finally hear some front-footed political leadership on this - the right thing and the smart thing.
@IPPR@guardian@dpcarrington@guyshrubsole@RoundOurWayUK@energygovuk Anti-Net Zero actors & those denying climate change do not care about the health & protection of those we love. We shouldn't be afraid to point this out. There are already too many ppl dealing w the impacts of climate change here in the UK&we need a govt that takes this seriously
It's encouraging to see @number10gov@andyburnham chairing a Cobra meeting today about extreme heat – at @RoundOurWayUK we have been calling from urgent action from the government on the climate impacts hitting people across the country now.
@IPPR@guardian@dpcarrington@guyshrubsole@RoundOurWayUK We should also be very clear that Net Zero is crucial in all of this for ensuring our climate impacts don't continue to get increasingly worse. We need to see the ramping up of the key work @energygovuk is doing alongside an URGENT plan for dealing with the impacts already here.
There are those that deny the issue or say that it's too late & nothing can be done. This is not true. We have the solutions and we can protect people, communities, wildlife & nature. Leaving people, businesses, schools, hospitals, communities to face this alone is not an option.
Today I've written for @LabourList on why working class communities deserve to see a bold plan from Labour on climate. Quite simply we all deserve to be safe and be protected. And there's quite a clear political case for the government too. https://t.co/DzlZaERLLj
At @RoundOurWayUK we'd like to see a dedicated cross-departmental Minister for Climate Impacts & Climate Risk to show that this govt is taking leadership on protecting people & communities both now & in the future. We need to see climate change taken head on across all govt dpts.
