Catholics, in an act of mental gymnastics, focus on the method.

It’s like Christ and the Pharisees. They Pharisees took “Shall not kill” extremely literal. Christ told them it includes hatred.

With communing with the dead the practice and the various methods are condemned.

What’s amazing about the ancient prayer you posted is that it is quoting scripture.

We know who God is by his revealed will in scripture.

Test all things with the only surety we have - scripture.

You cannot base your entire elaborate system of prayers to saints based on shady historical reference points when scripture is utterly silent on the topic

Read 1 Samuel 28. Samuel is furious Saul is speaking to him while dead.

All who die physically are alive in soul. Sinner and saint. The saint unto Christ and the sinner unto damnation.

Being “alive in Christ” isn’t some loophole that lets you pray to the dead. That’s a pagan justification for a whole pantheon of saints that sit in the place of pagan gods.
