(서울=뉴스1) 고승아 기자 = 그룹 더보이즈 제이콥이 자신의 이름을 내세운 첫 번째 솔로 앨범으로 새로운 도전에 나섰다.

제이콥은 지난 10일 첫 번째 솔로 앨범 'j.'(제이)의 전곡 음원과 타이틀곡 '슬로 댄싱'(Slow Dancing) 뮤직비디오를 공개하고, 현재 홍보 활동 중이다.

제이콥은 더보이즈 멤버 중 첫 번째로 솔로 앨범을 정식 발매했다. 지난 2017년 데뷔해 9년 만의 첫 솔로이기도 하다.

앨범명 'j.'는 제이콥의 이름 첫 글자에서 영감을 받았다. 얼터너티브 팝, 인디 팝 장르의 총 7곡이 수록됐다. 이번 앨범의 모든 작업은 독립적으로 진행한 것으로 전해졌다.

타이틀곡 '슬로 댄싱'은 내 감정을 친밀하게 일깨워주는, 노래의 형태를 빌린 러브레터다. 가장 견고한 관계란 부담 없이 자연스럽게 사랑이 피어나도록 서로를 이해하고 알아가는 느리고 꾸준한 순간들을 통해 형성된다는 것을 표현한 곡이다. 제이콥만의 부드러운 감성을 극대화한 점이 돋보인다.

멤버도 힘을 보탰다. 선우는 수록곡 '백 앤 포스'(Back & Forth)에 피처링과 작사로 참여했다. 선우는 이번 앨범에서 유일하게 한국어 랩 가사를 선보여 특색을 살렸다.

제이콥은 그간 더보이즈 앨범 수록곡을 작사, 작곡하거나 사운드클라우드 등을 통해 개인적인 작업물을 보여주며 역량을 보여줬다. 이번 앨범은 이러한 자신의 음악적 감수성을 집약해 그룹과는 다른 색을 첫 솔로 앨범에 고스란히 담아냈다.

조용히 마음을 여는 내용을 담은 '오프 더 레코드'로 앨범의 포문을 연 뒤, '백 앤 포스' '슬로 댄싱' '프로미스' 등 따뜻한 멜로디로 솔직한 고백을 전한다. 이어 '미스언더스투드'와 '영 앤 콘퓨즈드'로 간절한 마음을 노래한 그는 '스타스 인 더 스카이'로 조용한 희망을 선사한다. 듣기 편안한 스타일의 곡에 자신의 마음을 트랙 순으로 배치해 안정적인 완성도를 선보인다.

특히나 소속사와 분쟁 속에서 탄탄한 작업물을 홀로 선보였다는 점이 주목할 만하다. 아울러 더보이즈가 원헌드레드를 상대로 제기한 전속계약 효력정지 가처분이 인용된 후 앨범을 발매하는 만큼 기획사 명을 팬덤명(더비)로 낸 점도 화제가 됐다.

그는 한 방송을 통해 "갑자기 준비하게 된 거라 이 기간 안에 나올 수 있을까 했다"며 "솔로를 통해 팀으로 경험 못 했던 상황을 경험해 보고 싶었다"고 밝혔다. 이어 "하다 보니 점점 욕심이 생겨서 아는 분한테도 부탁드리고, 모르는 분한테도 가서 부탁하니 할 게 너무 많다는 걸 알게 됐다"며 "모든 과정을 알게 됐다"고 전했다.

타이틀곡은 발매 후 국내 음원 스트리밍 플랫폼 멜론 '핫 100' 차트에 진입하기도 했다. 솔로로서 발돋움한 제이콥이 어떤 음악적 색을 이어갈지 귀추가 주목된다.
