My 5 year old (who now goes by the name Tana Blackwood), has written a new song - 'I'm a bicorn' (she says a bicorn is "like a unicorn but with an extra horn"). Enjoy! https://t.co/BSISDw8xmC
Went to a birthday party yesterday. Everyone had to pretend to be popcorn - Nina (still 3!) remained curled on the floor throughout, forcing the rest to hop round her. At the end she solemnly declared 'I am the unpopped kernel'. 😍
“Will I pass through the tightening walls or will I wait in this place, between these pages, amidst these books that crumble from the shelves, for you or another to come and remind me that I am here?”
These words were what made me want to translate Ilarie Voronca’s prose...
@WildeJoanna This is such a wonderful (and appealing) alternative. And yes, all sorts of problems with ~words~ why should they be the only means of telling a story?
This is such a brilliant and moving piece of writing, about what it's like to have a messy, dysfunctional upbringing and why these sorts of personal narratives resist telling (b/c they're non-linear, nonsensical, outrageous, unbelievable)
@shrinkthinks So helpful- and generous - you've given so many new ways of thinking about something I've been trying to out-think/ boil down and get the better of.
@shrinkthinks Yes!!-where's the bit where they howl "I don't know what it means" at the wind, rip out all the pages, start again 100 times, and doubt their right to be the subject of their own experiences?!
(Dysfunctional families are potted histories of unprocessed trauma - which means they are full of frayed threads of stories that don't weave together into anything coherent. People acting in ways that can't be explained, details left out etc.)
(Even here I'm using this share as a placeholder for my own story - because it's exhausting to tell stories - but this is definitely the best placeholder I've found yet)
