“The Itsekiris are not threatening to boycott the elections in Warri federal constituency. It is the other groups who say INEC must do the delineation in their own way who are telling their people not to participate in the 2027 elections” ~Lawrence Erewele Esq.

The King of Warri Speaks on Niger Delta Oil and Community Welfare
His Majesty O̩gíamẹ̀ Atuwatsé III, CFR, the Olú of Warri spoke about how communities in the Niger Delta that produce Nigeria’s oil do not benefit from the resources found in their areas.
In an interview with BBC News Pidgin, he spoke about the law-abiding nature of the Itsekiri people and what industry stakeholders should do for the people of the Niger Delta.

Detailed Narration of the Warri Incident – Saturday, August 23, 2025
Urhobo Tenants attacks against Itsekiri Peaceful Rally.
Before diving into the events of that fateful Saturday, I must state an incontrovertible truth that forms the bedrock of this entire conflict: the Agbassa Urhobos are legally and historically Customary tenants of the Itsekiris. This is not a matter of debate, nor is it up for reinterpretation by propaganda. The courts of Nigeria, from colonial times up to the Supreme Court, have ruled no fewer than 14 times against the Urhobos of Agbassa, affirming that they have no ownership rights over Warri lands. Their tenancy status is well established. Yet, as history has shown, their denial of this truth has fueled cycles of provocation and violence whenever the political climate gives them cover.
Historical Pattern of Urhobo Attacks
The attacks carried out on August 23rd were neither novel nor surprising to the Itsekiri nation. What happened that day is part of a longstanding pattern: whenever an Urhobo man occupies the governorship of Delta State, Urhobos in Warri seize the opportunity to launch attacks on their Itsekiri landlords. The history speaks for itself.
•1992 (Governor Felix Ibru): A year after Delta State was carved out of Bendel, the Urhobos attacked the Itsekiri coronation carnival train—a cultural celebration that predates the state itself. They killed 2 Itsekiris, provoking retaliation that resulted in 3 Urhobo deaths.
•1993 (still under Felix Ibru): They struck again during another carnival procession, killing an Itsekiri. Retaliation left 5 Urhobos dead, by their own admission.
•2000 & 2004 (Governor James Onanefe Ibori): Even while the Itsekiris were still locked in deadly war with the Ijaws, Urhobos in Warri launched unprovoked attacks, killing multiple Itsekiris. Retaliation was decisive. More than 20 Urhobos died and over 200 of them injured (by their own count and Red Cross), and their estates were razed by Itsekiri fighters. For months, the Urhobos were driven out of Warri entirely. Till date that war is called Okumagba greatest regret because he lost against itsekiri’s.
Fast forward to today: with another Urhobo governor, Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, in office, the cycle has repeated. Under his watch, there have been multiple provocations and assaults by Urhobos in Warri against Itsekiris. The events of August 23rd are merely the latest chapter.
Events of Saturday, August 23, 2025
The Ugbuwangue Rally
In the early hours of the day, Itsekiri youths assembled at Ugbuwangue, preparing to rally across Warri in honor of the 4th Coronation Anniversary of His Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR, the Olu of Warri Kingdom. The procession was peaceful, joyous, and cultural in nature, passing through major roads to showcase unity and loyalty to the crown.
However, at the Igbo Market Roundabout, the procession came under sudden attack. A tricycle (keke), which had been tailing the group from Ugbuwangue, sped ahead and blocked the path. Its occupants leapt out armed with machetes and began chasing the Itsekiris, striking with blades and hurling stones. Almost immediately, more Urhobo Agbassa tenants emerged with additional machetes, escalating the assault.
Itsekiri youths nearby quickly regrouped, surged forward, and pushed the Urhobos back into their settlement “their cage,” as we call it.
(See attached videos: 1. First ambush at Igbo Market against itsekiri’s, 2. Reinforcement by Itsekiri youths repelling attackers before police intervened.)
Am sorry if hv misinterpreted ur will in the past. Yesterday I come to conclusion in my humble mind to follow and dedicate my all to AAC and stand with the man with a new Nigeria idealogy. Hope of the Masses. You have my membership. No retreat no surrender
Supreme Court Ruling on Customary Land Tenancy in Warri Areas
The Supreme Court has ruled that individuals residing in the Igbudu, Ogunu, Edjeba, Ekurede Urhobo, and Agbassa areas if they are not of Itsekiri origin are considered customary tenants. According to the judgment, this status is grounded in established traditional land rights, and not even the Inspector General of Police has the authority to override or alter that designation. In short, unless you’re Itsekiri, you’re a tenant on that land, under customary law.
