The only other time I've heard of newborn babies being burnt alive in NICU wards is when Israel bombs hospitals in Gaza.

But this happened in Pakistan's capital city, at a government hospital.

One is a war crime; what is this? What do we call this level of criminal negligence?

I am a consultant paeds surgeon myself and find this argument bullshit.Gynae resident talking about NICU incident is insane.
There wasn’t anybody present inside the nursery at that time which is negligence at staff and drs end .no justification can suffice that.

All the cms pm, ministers, bureaucrats will upgrade and renovate their offices and cars. Increase the amount of protocol and luxuries. But, they will never spend the budget on schools n hospitals. Patients get treated in worst possible environment. Drs work with lowest available resources. But they will ultimately tell u that it’s the fault of doctors. It’s not just PIMS. It’s every other public hospital in the country. Nobody’s gonna ask ministers and secretaries. Few drs will be suspended, blame will be shifted on people lowest in power tier and that’s how they will solve the issue till the next big thing happens!

There are so many questions here. How does a fire in a hospital reach the NICU and 14 babies don’t make it out? Where were the fire alarms? The emergency exits? The evacuation protocol? Where was the staff? Why couldn’t these babies be evacuated? How does a hospital not have basic systems in place for exactly this kind of emergency?! This is the NICU. Literally one of the most vulnerable places in any hospital. What kind of catastrophic failure has to happen at EVERY level for 14 newborns to die in a fire?
Is this really how our government hospitals are being run? Fourteen babies should not die in a hospital fire. Full stop.

Our Health Minister saying ‘PIMS is operating beyond its capacity’ is not an excuse for fourteen newborn babies dying in a hospital fire. The implication of this makes my fucking blood boil. Fire safety is not a luxury for people who can afford high-end private hospitals.

In June 2023, patients died at PIMS hospital because the air-conditioning system failed. The problem was known. The project was delayed. The warnings were public.

Today, an air-conditioner compressor exploded in the nursery of the same hospital and killed 15 newborns.

Mustafa Kamal is the Federal Health Minister. The PIMS administration answers to him. This level of repeated failure on basic hospital safety is not sustainable.

Resignations are the minimum starting point. Federal Health Minister has to go home.

CDA Fire Brigade has now put it in writing.

Fire and life-safety arrangements at PIMS were not up to standard.

Emergency exits were locked from the outside or blocked.

Hospital security hindered the first fire crew.

Crowd control at the site was inadequate.

This is the hospital whose Executive Director was protected for years as “system ka banda.” Complaints did not move him. He stayed.

A nursery with oxygen and incubators is a high-risk room. The codes already say that. The 2023 cooling collapse already said that. Today the official fire report says the safety system was not there when it was needed.

The Health Secretary has been removed. That is not enough.

The people who ran this building, and the people who kept them in place, have to go.
