I pitched EV DOCTOR'S idea to a Silicon Valley VC.

He had only one question: "How much have you raised?"

"Nothing. Bootstrapped with some M. Tech stipend, savings and government grants."

Seventeen minutes. That's all he gave me.

"Not scalable."

That same week?

A US startup raised $3M for an app that reminds you to drink water.

And something clicked.

India isn't building for convenience.
We're building for survival.

While the Valley optimizes comfort, Indian founders are solving problems that actually keep people up at night.

This is what happens when you innovate under constraints.

Broken battery diagnostics become data-driven tools.

Scarce water becomes smart greenhouses.

Patchy infrastructure becomes rockets from garages.

The world calls this "too local."

But climate, mobility, energy, food security, these aren't local problems.

They're tomorrow's global emergencies.

And India is already solving them.

In 2013,

while I was doing electrical engineering, we as a group of 1st year students participated in our college project exhibition.

The fest had a project exhibition part also, where we showed interest and participated e eventually.

The only bad thing was to make it within 2 days.

We had to build anything using electronic components, enclosures etc.

And one of us decided to build a Metal Detector (we all zeroed down on that, as others were clueless about what to build)

We got the breadboard, potentiometer, sensor, battery and jumper wires.

Built it within 2 hours, costing around Rs 500-600 in total.

Time to show our breakthrough to the world 🫣

Many projects were there, most of them were readymade ones, bought from local project makers. (Yes they make any projects for students, quite cash positive stuff, separate market for that)

And our breakthrough 'Metal Detector' stopped working, just when the jury entered the hall. It started beeping randomly, even when metal was not there in proximity of flux based sensor.

Every one of us, 4 people were now standing there confused, afraid and what not.

One of us, Abhishek gave the idea of giving the new title 'Oxygen Detector' 😂😂

But others disagreed, the jury arrived at the bench, we explained what we tried to build, but stopped working.

One of them (jury) laughed and said "Jab kaam kare, tab bata dena"

And they moved.

One of the projects, readymade one got the first prize.

Second and third prizes were also given to white labelled readymade projects.

Moral: At times demand is blind, it doesn't discriminate. Truth diminishes.

But, we thought 'who cares.'

We were never a businessman, we were builders. (And we literally never thought of buying the kit, that might ruined the fun of building things together)

We will keep building, the world will resonate when we build something really meaningful.
