Pauline Hanson & One Nation keep saying Australia should build new coal-fired power stations.

Great. One simple question:

WHO IS GOING TO BUILD THEM?

GE? Siemens? Toshiba? Mitsubishi? Hitachi?

Much of the Western OEM industry that once designed and manufactured new coal power equipment has exited, consolidated or moved its capability elsewhere.

So name the OEM, Pauline.

Name the company that will manufacture the boilers and turbines. Name the EPC contractor. Explain where the specialist engineering comes from and, importantly, who supplies critical parts and upgrades for the next 40–50 years.

And if the answer is Chinese state-owned manufacturers, One Nation has a rather large problem.

China announced in 2021 that it would stop building new coal-fired power projects overseas.

But even assuming Pauline somehow got around that, is One Nation seriously proposing Australia become dependent on Chinese state-owned companies for decades to keep these power stations operating?

The same China One Nation constantly warns us about?

I’ve worked around industrial power construction and coal-fired power station maintenance. These aren’t machines you simply order from a catalogue. They require enormous engineering, manufacturing and long-term supply chains.

It’s like saying Australia should start manufacturing Waugh, Marion and Bucyrus draglines again because we still operate draglines.

Could you recreate the industry with enough billions? Probably.

But why?

So enough slogans.

Name the OEM.
Name the EPC contractor.
Name the manufacturer.
Show us the cost.
Show us the timeframe.
Show us the 40-year parts and maintenance strategy.

Until One Nation can answer those basic questions, “build new coal” isn’t an energy policy.

It’s a political slogan looking for an engineering solution.

I've just spent the afternoon listening to the Australian Prime Minister's wife talk about perimenopause, Wordle and her weight.

Not what I had planned for a Saturday afternoon in Melbourne.

A friend Kerrie Dubya had tickets to a local women's wellness lunch at our local - Patterson River Golf Club and asked me to come along.

The organisers said there'd be a surprise guest. I assumed a wellness guru with a slide deck and a green smoothie.

It was Jodie Haydon. The Australian prime minister's wife.

She sat down and within about four minutes had told a room full of women she'd never met that she's 48 and perimenopausal.

No notes. No script. No BS.

She talked about her weight going up and down over the years, the way it does for most of us.

I sat there thinking, well, same.

She's taken herself off social media almost entirely, so she doesn't have to read what people say about her.

Sensible woman.

She surrounds herself with good people instead.

Her morning goes like this. Cup of tea. Wordle on a group chat with her girlfriends. Walk the dog. Walk to the station. Train. Walk to work.

Yes, work.

Full time, senior job, nine people reporting to her.

She married the Prime Minister and kept catching the train to work.

And since we were all there to talk about wellness, she let us know her version includes a glass of wine and a proper catch up with her mates.

Jodie. I love you.

She was single for a long time before she met Anthony, and she told us never to settle for second best.

There's an Italian saying that covers it. Better alone than in bad company.

She said we need to be kinder to ourselves and to each other.

And that the ground women have gained needs looking after, because misogyny is on the rise and our voices need to stay loud.

Honestly it felt less like a speech and more like sitting in somebody's kitchen with a room full of girlfriends.

I came home and told my daughters all about her.

Australian ladies, girls and everyone. We're in good hands with Jodie watching The Voice on the couch with Albo.

She might put in a word or 2 for us.

Whether government should be smaller is an interesting discussion. It just isn't the discussion we were having.

We were discussing whether your description of Australia's economic history in a 90 second clip was accurate.

It wasn't.

What I think is extraordinary isn't that you got things wrong. Everyone does. It's that you've conceded precisely nothing.

Not one factual error. Not one correction. Not one "Fair enough, I got that wrong".

You have a remarkable ability to turn economic fiction into confident public performance. The problem isn't just the mistake. It's that once the performance is over, the fiction is simply left behind for your audience to keep repeating.

You haven't acknowledged that you confused government debt with the Future Fund. Your reply now explains how the Future Fund grew from around $60 billion to $255 billion which is a baffling addition, given you previously spoke about it as though it had ceased to exist.

You haven't acknowledged that you claimed the GFC stimulus was funded by the Future Fund. Or that your broader account of Australia's response to the GFC was wildly misleading.

Instead, you've simply changed the subject, which is a perfectly respectable debating tactic, provided nobody remembers what the original discussion was about.

When the errors are painstakingly explained, you don't correct the record. You simply move on, leaving the misinformation behind for your audience to repeat as though it were true.
