This is the real Handmaid's Tale:

It's estimated that roughly 5 million European women were captured and enslaved as concubines in the Islamic Ottoman Empire.

They were taken in raids, captured during battles and sieges during Ottoman invasions into Europe, from their homes and off ships as they traveled. From Iceland to Ireland to Eastern Europe, these young girls were forced into s*xual slavery by the Turks.

If they landed in the Imperial Harem, they were inspected like brood mares and converted to Islam. If chosen for a night with the sultan, they were combed over, washed, had all body hair removed and were decorated with henna before being deflowered by their new slave master.

The Barbary slave trade across the board, from North Africa to the heart of the Ottoman Empire, considered these female slaves so valuable they wouldn't even generally accept ransoms or demands for their return by European powers or church groups trying to buy them back.

Why don't we talk about Islamic slavery, still ongoing to this day? Thousands of women are still held in this bondage in 2026.
