This was so disappointing. It’s a matter of historical record that Lincoln started the war, the North attacked first, and no one told Southerners they couldn’t keep their slaves until the last year of the war. You can’t trust that Nick has actually studied anything about actual history he’s relying on the same public school/Hollywood propaganda narratives about the Civil War, just like he does about WWII.

This is one of the many errors that comes from insisting on taking every single thing in the Bible literally. The reality is that some of it has grounding in objective history but also contains spiritual meaning (mythology) woven into it which is designed to inspire you to contemplate the meaning inwardly. The literal possibilities are there to give you something to hang on to until your conscience is ready for the inner spiritual meaning. As long as you cling to literal interpretation your stuck in The World arguing about this or that historical fact, when the teaching is really about not getting stuck in The World (John 18:36 “my Kingdom is not of this world”)

For everyone whose mouth is still hanging open about this, here a list of quotes directly from Lincoln about how he had no intention of abolishing slavery going in to the war.

• First Inaugural Address (March 4, 1861):
“I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.”

• Letter to Horace Greeley (August 22, 1862):
“My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.”

• Fourth Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Charleston, Illinois (September 18, 1858):
“I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races […] I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality.”

• Speech at Peoria, Illinois (October 16, 1854):

The North agreed to abandon Fort Sumter as clearly a Southern asset but then stalled and instead moved in warships to the harbor. A standoff ensued and no one can verify who fired the first shot, but the North was obliged to abandon based on the rights of State secession as guaranteed in the Constitution. Maybe you should do your own research before dying on a hill for a corrupt leftist public school narrative.
