Poland has initiated an espionage case against Tomasz Schmidt, a judge from the Voivodeship Administrative Court in Warsaw, who has sought political asylum in Belarus

The Polish Prosecutor's Office has commenced the investigation, which could result in Schmidt facing between eight years to life imprisonment.

A spokesperson for the Polish prosecutor's office stated that the investigation aims to determine the nature of Schmidt's potential ties to foreign intelligence services and evaluate the extent of information exchanged with them.

In response to the situation, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has instructed the Ministry of Justice to promptly revoke Schmidt's judicial immunity.

During a press conference in Minsk on May 6, Schmidt cited pressure from authorities in Poland as his reason for leaving the country.
