GQ: Many people would say that Lovely Runner (2024) was the turning point in Byeon Woo Seok's career. That's how others see it, but what do you consider your own turning point?

Woo Seok: Lovely Runner was definitely a turning point. But I don't think it was the only turning point in my life. I've always tried my best in every moment. Even after Lovely Runner, I never really felt like my life had changed dramatically. It's hard to describe it almost didn't feel real. I wasn't fully aware of it. It felt like I was still living inside a drama. I kept thinking, "Wow, this feels like a drama. This is so fascinating." That's how I got through that period. Even now, rather than focusing on a specific turning point, I just try to do my best every day.

GQ: Do you feel like you have to prove yourself?

Woo Seok: I think people pay closer attention to my work now, so I try to prepare even more thoroughly. I think a lot about how I express things and how I approach a role. At the end of the day, as an actor, the most important thing is to fully become the character and connect with people through that character. More than anything, I want to show people a character that feels real and convincing.

GQ: Especially over the past two years, many of the numbers surrounding Byeon Woo Seok have risen dramatically. If there's one thing that keeps you grounded amid all that momentum something that prevents you from being swept away by it what is it?

Woo Seok: My past self.

GQ: Your past self?

Woo Seok: Yes. Whenever things get overwhelming, I find myself looking back. There are moments in life that are genuinely difficult, you know? And during those times, I think about who I used to be.

GQ: What was the past Byeon Woo Seok like? Do you think about the passion and determination you had back then?

Woo Seok: Um...

GQ: Was that too poetic?

Woo Seok: Yes. (Laughs) Rather than some burning passion, I think about the times when things weren't going well and when life felt difficult. Remembering those moments makes me realize just how happy I am now.
