Told my mom @ 22. She was in shock and didn't say much. I asked her not to tell my Dad but she said she couldn't. Dad sent me a text and said this was a phase, would ruin my life, and they wouldn't support me if I did it. Went back in the closet for 7 years of misery.

I was visiting a friend shortly before my 29th birthday, and we were talking about our plans for the future, and I realized that I had none. There was nothing that I wanted out of life. Nothing I wanted to achieve. I had decided years ago that I would not end my life while my parents and dog were alive, but that was the only thing keeping me here. There weren't any positive reasons.

I broke down when I got home. I couldn't keep living like this. I started on HRT two months later. Did not tell my parents. Moved across the country ~5 months into transitioning. My mom eventually reached out about visiting and that's when I told her.

The response this time was that they were sorry for not listening to me before, and obviously if this has been going on for the last 7 years it's not a phase. I'm so thankful they're supportive now.

My life didn't magically fix itself, but in the last 1.5 years I have gotten to experience something that has been missing from my life since I turned 13; Joy. I still struggle with depression, but for the first time in my adult life I have days where I think to myself, "Things are good. I am happy that I'm alive".
