✅ Victory for Somali Workers!

The ILO has officially questioned the Somali government’s delegate nomination process after SOCOTU was excluded from consultations. This is a huge win for workers’ rights, transparency, and democratic union representation.

The Credentials Committee found the government’s actions non-compliant with ILO rules, and SOCOTU’s role as a representative union has been internationally recognized. The world is watching — and Somali workers will not be silenced.

The General Secretary of SOMWU, Sister Hamdi Osman, led a delegation on an official visit to the Kenya County Government Workers Union (KCGWU) Headquarters to strengthen ties between the two unions within the East African Community.

The delegation was warmly received by KCGWU General Secretary, Hon. Roba Duba, who welcomed the collaboration aimed at enhancing workers’ rights, policy exchange, and solidarity between municipal workers in Kenya and Somalia.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering regional cooperation, sharing best practices, and advocating for improved labor conditions across East Africa. The visit marks a significant step toward unity and partnership among workers’ unions in the region.

SOMWU Leadership Meets with Azerbaijan Trade Union Officials

Hikmat Osmanov, Chairman of the Trade Union of Public Administration and Public Service Workers of Azerbaijan and Deputy Chairman of AHLK, held a meeting with Mohamed Osman Haji Ali, President of SOMWU—the largest public service workers’ union in Somalia—and Hamdi Abdulkadir Osman, Secretary General of SOMWU.

During the discussions, the SOMWU delegation shared their positive impressions of their meeting with Sahib Mammadov, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation. They emphasized their confidence that the strong friendship between Somalia and Azerbaijan would continue to flourish through enhanced cooperation between trade unions.

Chairman Hikmat Osmanov provided an overview of the activities of the sectoral trade union in Azerbaijan and engaged in a productive exchange, addressing key questions from the SOMWU representatives.

Empowering Workers, Advancing Social Justice

On this World Social Justice Day, the Somali Congress of Trade Unions (SOCOTU) reaffirms its commitment to promoting fair wages, decent working conditions, and equal opportunities for all workers across Somalia. Social justice is the foundation of a just and equitable society, ensuring that every worker—regardless of gender, background, or profession—enjoys their fundamental rights and protections.

In Somalia and beyond, workers continue to face challenges such as unfair wages, unsafe workplaces, and a lack of job security. SOCOTU calls on employers, policymakers, and international partners to work together to eliminate labor exploitation, strengthen workers’ rights, and create inclusive economic policies that benefit all.

As we mark this day, SOCOTU urges the Somali government and business leaders to:
✅ Enforce labor laws that protect workers’ rights
✅ Promote fair wages and equal pay for equal work
✅ Strengthen social protection systems for vulnerable workers
✅ Encourage dialogue between employers, workers, and unions

The SOMWU National Sector Council Conference has been rescheduled to take place on March 10th and 11th, 2025, in Kismayo. This decision was made due to security concerns and the ongoing tensions between the Jubaland State and the Federal Government regarding the state election, which the Somali Government has not recognized.

SOMWU, Somalia’s largest union representing public sector employees, has launched a nationwide campaign to promote gender equality and empower women within the public sector. The campaign, titled “Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities,” aims to address the systemic gender disparities in wages, representation, and working conditions for women across Somalia’s public services.

PSI has a long history of fighting for workers' rights, for the safety and dignity of their work, for public services. PSI has also improved the conditions of workers by collectively bargaining for better wages and benefits in the healthcare, education or public administration sectors. With also training and resources for members to take charge, organizing social justice and gender equality campaigns that advocate for communities of workers to have a healthier working environments.

Today, we held an important meeting to discuss the formal notification sent to the City of Afgoye regarding the upcoming bargaining talks. As our current two-year agreement nears its expiration on December 31, 2024, we are preparing to enter negotiations to secure a new contract that better addresses the needs and concerns of our members.
