There is 15+ years worth of FASCINATING sociological research on virtual worlds and digital identity, and yet many #metaverse proponents are quick to claim the wheel is currently being invented.
There is a wealth of information out there. Use it.
Examples in a thread below. 👇
We've got a medium with the spirit of oral culture, the permissive structure of open-source software, a traceable history and probably a legacy entirely its own.
Writers, grab your proverbial pens.
Will the blockchain change storytelling?
If history is any indication, probably.
How we tell and also consume stories has always been dependent on the medium.
And then we have remixing. This can depend on the genesis storyteller and how permissive they want their IP, but it is at least technically possible to build stories like open-source software. Where it goes is entirely dependent on how the community builds on it.
"The key distinction is between sensory immersion and social immersion...The metaverse’s history indicates that social immersion is the metaverse’s foundation."

TLDR;
We’re all going to be world-builders one day.
To do it well - while writing or crafting next-gen digital experiences - think about physical details, history, socio-political landscape, metaphysics, and the best frame for presenting an immersive universe to your audience.
As we transition to the metaverse, every brand & creator will be world building in some way.
But what is world building?
The dictionary definition is “the art of creating a new fictional world” - Merriam Webster.
But the key decision, especially for brands and creators, is what not to include. Maybe you memorized the 100 years history of your world, but we probably don’t need to. Whether writing or dropping a NFT project, be choosy with world details so its immersive but not overwhelming.
