Breaking down this outrage -

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) is fully funded by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, an autonomous body financed mainly through donations by Hindu pilgrims. This Rs 600 crore investment funds a medical institute in Jammu’s Reasi district in Jammu Kashmir, where Hindus are a marginalised minority, only about 28.44% of the UT's population.

Yet, out of the first batch of 50 MBBS students admitted for the 2025-26 session, only 7 are Hindu and just one Sikh. The rest do not reflect the demographic of the primary funding community -Hindus. This has reportedly raised serious questions about representation at an institution built with Hindu devotees' money and substantial offerings in the form of gold & silver, in a UT where Hindus are already a minority and marginalised. Notably Jamm Kashmir has witnessed a forced Kashmiri Hindu exodus and many killings and massacres targeted against the regions’ Hindu population.

Important to note that India’s constitution forbids reservations solely based on religion. Though some states have minority sub-quotas within OBC categories. However J&K does not, and neither does this fully Hindu-funded medical institute. Given the autonomous and Hindu donation-based funding structure, the underrepresentation of Hindus here is striking and is causing considerable outrage.
