My rule is that as long as we are in a situation where mutual respect is being practiced I will call them by their name. I have done this for years with minimum issues. I work in an industry with a much higher instance of trans identification. I've even had mods in my communities who are trans... know my position... and have remained good friends with me. You don't have to tacitly approve of someone else's life decisions in order to be respectful and kind. But my perspective is fairly nuanced because there is also a difference between one mental condition and another, a medical condition, and a fad. These things are not equal... someone who has been bullied into a poor mental state and then subsequently bullies OTHERS in the same way is a prick. I've seen that more times than I wish I had. People who have actual gods-to-honest dysmorphia - as someone who is very ADHD with a condition that is overdiagnosed and constantly ridiculed I get that when your legitimate illness becomes someone else's fad it sucks. It's the opposite of helpful. I COULD go on and on, but my point is each person is unique and their situation is as well. My reaction depends on behavior. If someone is a dismissive judgemental asshole towards me I'm not one to lie down and take it...your getting allll the sass and sarcasm I can manage. Don't antagonize people if you can't deal with the consequences of your actions. That is all.

We're adversarial in some ideologies, but at the end of the day they know who I am and vice versa - I've HAD some "friends" abandon me over it all, but not all.
